About Dale

I completed my Initial teacher training with the GORSE Academies Trust in 2017. The qualification: Biology with Science, Secondary School PGCE and QTS was accredited by Sheffield Hallam University, I have subsequently taught in two schools in England and two in Scotland.

At Aberdeen Grammar school I gained experience in planning and delivering Biology and Science lessons to S1-S3 students and to assist senior pupils in their revision for assessments. At St Machar Academy, I taught classes in biology, chemistry and physics and gained invaluable knowledge of the CfE. During lock-down, I managed two online classes per week for S3 biology students using Google classroom. This included slide presentations; work books for them to respond to questions and quizzes to assess their knowledge. At Freeston Academy, I taught biology to all year groups and chemistry and physics up to Y10. My classes ranged from a Y8 class with a very broad spectrum of SEN requirements to a top set Y11 class in preparation for their GCSEs. At Whitcliffe Mount School, I taught Biology to two lower set year Y11 classes in preparation for their GCSEs. This involved the mark, plan, teach ideas outlined in the book by Ross McGill. I also delivered lessons to disengaged students during weekly interventions using Echalk, Twinkl and Exampro resources to differentiate activities. I marked mock GCSE exam papers and assisted in after school revision classes.

At SAC, I was the Unit Tutor for B. Tech. Animal Welfare and also covered courses from Diploma to MSc levels. Subjects taught included Animal Behaviour, Health, Physiology, Production, Organic Agriculture, Quality Assurance, Meat Science, Legislation, New technology & Flexible learning. Training at SAC included the Teaching Induction Course, Flexible Learning Techniques, Presentation Skills and Participative Training Techniques.

About the lesson

Lessons are personalised according to the learners needs. I am a strong believer in promoting student directed learning. A good starting point is to address the criteria on which the learner is going to be assessed. For most students, practicing exam questions is an important first step. This can be used to assess prior knowledge, highlight any weaknesses and strengthen the learners’ ability to answer questions correctly. Understanding the assessment process is crucial for the learner to succeed.

I have lesson plans that cover the whole curricula for GCSE and CfE Nat 4 and 5 and Higher Biology. I have experience of delivering these lessons online using the Google Classroom Suite. Typically lessons include slide presentations; work books for students to respond to questions and quizzes to assess their knowledge. Lesson plans also include links to the latest knowledge for students to extend their learning.
