About Tom

I completed a PhD in fluid dynamics (mechanical engineering) at the University of Bristol in 2019, having studied maths (BA+MMath) at Clare College, University of Cambridge. During my PhD, I was a teaching assistant for mathematical methods, fluids and programming in MATLAB. I also worked as a scribe for SEN for A-level physics in 2019, so have recent experience of secondary school education.

In addition to university level, I tutor at secondary level, in particular further maths A-level and university entrance exams, such as STEP for maths at Cambridge and Warwick, plus physics up to A-level.

At degree level, my specialism is fluid dynamics, but will cover other areas of applied maths and mathematical methods for engineers and physicists. Please enquire about other areas you are interested in, as I may be able to help.

About the lesson

You develop a deeper understanding of and better attainment in the subject when you can reason it out for themselves. Thus, I give you time to think, but am also not afraid to explain concepts either from their sticking point or from scratch when required. Particularly in maths, I can share many tips of the trade, which will help you to work more efficiently.

Taking time to agree learning objectives, both in the first session and throughout the year, will ensure that you have the best chances of success. I have enjoyed my time at university, so I want to make sure everyone has the chance to too.

You are clear about which points you would like help with, which helps me tailor my support to you.

You learn quickly and definitely have strong mathematical ability, coping well with more complicated examples after we have been through simpler ones.

Perfect! Absolutely brilliant!! Great explanations along with helping you to understand anything from the basics to complicated maths. Has really helped me. I can notice the difference in my knowledge even from the first session!

You are enthuastic and a pleasure to teach. If you continue taking everything on board as well as you have done today, you'll get a good grade in those topics you are concerned about. Your clear plan of what you would like to discuss helps me to help you, so thank you.
