  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I started taking piano lessons when I was six, started writing my own songs in high school, and began composing classical music as a freshman in college. I realized music was going to be the focus of my life shortly after that.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Not really. I like a lot of different types of music, and I don’t usually stick to one artist or genre for very long. My listening includes classical (from the medieval era to the present), jazz, bluegrass and roots, pop, country, folk, traditional music from all over the world…etc.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I’ve seen a lot of students minds get blown by 20th-century “post-tonal” music theory. It’s so different than what most people are exposed to early on that it’s shocking. Different people take that different ways…
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

The one you’re a beginner at!
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

As the old joke says: practice, practice, practice! When you’re learning a new skill or a new subject, you’re actually forging new neural pathways in your brain. That takes time, repetition and concentration. Patience and persistence will eventually get you there. It often helps to break skills down into their smaller parts.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

To be honest, I’m more of a morning person. So let’s leave out the bar and maybe meet for coffee instead. And since I really do meet my musician friends for coffee, we’ll stick to people I don’t actually know. How about: the banjo player Bela Fleck, whose eclectic and wide-ranging musicality I admire; the classical composer Valerie Coleman, of whom I am a total fanboy; and the singer/songwriter Regina Spektor, because I would love to ask her what some of her lyrics mean.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

My first experiences teaching music were as the music director for musical theater productions. Not all actors have much training in music, so that was where I learned how to look for the different ways that work for individual people to learn musical concepts. I kept that lesson in mind when I started teaching music theory, ear training and composition.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I’m going to take the time to find out what your strengths are, and help you build bridges from them to the areas you want to work on. I’m going to be patient with you, and if you don’t pick something up right away, I’m going to break it down until it’s a size you can grasp and proceed from there. Sometimes the practice you need is just going to be rote drill; I’ll help you set goals and benchmarks and let you know that you’re making progress so you don’t feel like you’re just slogging through a mire of repetition. But if you need help grasping a concept or recognizing a pattern, I’ll try different things until I find the key to unlock it for you.
