About Harry
I have recently completed my PhD in chemistry at the University of Manchester. During my studies I undertook a role as a Graduate Teaching Assistant supporting undergraduate students to understand complex scientific ideas. I have also previously tutored students for both GCSE and A-Level chemistry.

My teaching method is to provide assistance to encourage self-learning. I believe that developing as a chemistry student is rooted in having a strong understanding of the core principals that underpin all aspects of chemistry. Through this approach, examinations shift from having a focus on memorisation and regurgitation of a wide variety of specific details to application of a few core principals.
All work will be re-enforced through a variety of assessment techniques which aim to stimulate and interest students. Assessments will also aim to improve exam technique.
A typical lesson will follow this typical layout:
1. Introduction of a given topic through asking the student what do you know? Without reference to notes or textbooks, the student will create mind maps and lists highlighting the areas they know within the topic area.
2. What did you miss? With my help we will discuss key areas that were missed from the work, and use these are a starting point for discussion during the lesson.
3. The next part of the lesson will centre around the discussion of key areas. In this section I will aim to support the student in developing their understanding of key principles and provide them with techniques they can use to further their understanding.
4. The final part of the lesson will focus on testing what the student learnt. Crucially, this part of the lesson should be about letting the student make mistakes in a comfortable and supportive environment. I've found over the course of my education that making mistakes has allowed me to learn more than getting things right the first time round, and that is a key belief carried forward into all lessons.
