About Shiva
Hello, my name is Shiva. As a Doctoral Chemical Engineer, I’m offering expert one-to-one tuition designed to help students excel in their STEM subjects. Having completed my Doctorate at the University of Birmingham and my undergraduate degree at the University of Sheffield, I have a deep and practical understanding of these core subjects that goes beyond the textbook.
Subjects Offered:
• Mathematics: GCSE & A-Level
• Physics: GCSE & A-Level
• Chemistry: GCSE & A-Level
My Approach: My background as a University Demonstrator and Research Engineer has taught me how to translate complex technical concepts into practical, understandable solutions. I apply this directly to my tutoring:
• Building True Understanding: We will move beyond simple memorisation to grasp the fundamental concepts, from the principles of calculus in Maths, to reaction mechanisms in Chemistry, to classical mechanics in Physics.
• Mentorship and Support: My experience mentoring undergraduate students at the University of Birmingham has given me a proven ability to guide students, support their academic growth, and build their confidence.
• Exam Technique Mastery: A significant portion of our sessions will focus on mastering exam technique. We will deconstruct mark schemes and work through past papers to ensure you know how to secure every possible mark.

Q&As
• What qualifications and experience do you have?
I hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, as well as an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sheffield. This background has provided me with extensive experience in teaching complex topics to students at both the A-level and university undergraduate levels. Beyond formal teaching, I am passionate about mentoring and have a proven track record of helping students overcome academic challenges and achieve their goals.
• What can I expect in the first lesson?
The first lesson is all about getting to know your ability and your learning needs. We'll start with a friendly chat to identify their strengths and areas for improvement. I'll then conduct a short, informal assessment that covers key topics from the curriculum. To make the most of our time, it's also helpful if you can provide any recent school reports or test results beforehand.
• How do I teach online?
I teach using a video conferencing platform like Zoom or Microsoft Teams. To create an engaging and interactive experience, we use a shared online whiteboard. This allows both me and the student to write, draw, and annotate documents in real-time, just like we would in person. I use a graphics tablet and stylus to ensure my writing is clear and easy to follow.
• What can I expect from a typical lesson?
A typical lesson is structured for maximum impact. We'll begin with a quick review of the previous session's topic to ensure the concepts have stuck. Then, we'll dive into a new area that needs attention, breaking it down into a teaching phase followed by practical exercises. We'll always finish by summarising what we've learnt, and I'll set a small amount of homework to reinforce the new skills.
• How do I track progress?
I use Google Classroom to keep everything organised. It acts as a central hub where I can share resources, assign homework, and track your progress over time. This system allows me to meticulously plan future lessons based on performance and provides you with transparent, real-time updates on their development.
