About Logan
I am a PhD candidate in Molecular Microbiology at Indiana University with a passion for transforming complex scientific challenges into clear, actionable understanding. Throughout my academic career, I have dedicated myself to both high-level research and the development of the next generation of scientists.
Academic & Research Excellence
My legitimacy as an instructor is rooted in my active research career. As a GRFP (Graduate Research Fellowship Program) fellow and a published researcher with six peer-reviewed papers—including two as first author—I operate at the cutting edge of bacterial genetics and bioinformatics. My research focuses on quorum sensing regulation and the development of novel CRISPRi toolkits, giving me a deep, practical understanding of the biological systems that often form the core of undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
Proven Instructional Impact
I believe that the best teachers are those who can bridge the gap between abstract theory and empirical reality. My effectiveness in the classroom is proven: when I served as an instructor for undergraduate genetics, my focus on active learning and structured conceptual breakdown led to an average grade increase for my section from 83% to 91% while simultaneously eliminating failing grades. I don't just help you pass; I help you master the material at a level that will serve you throughout your academic and professional career.
Professionalism & Mentorship
My teaching philosophy is built on three pillars: clarity, rigor, and empathy. As a mentor to undergraduate researchers, I have learned that students succeed most when they have a partner who understands both the pressure of high-stakes exams and the technical nuances of experimental design. I treat every student with the professionalism of a colleague and the patience of a mentor.
I am currently in the final stages of completing my doctoral degree, and I am committed to providing the same dedication and excellence in our private mentorship sessions that I bring to my laboratory work. Whether you are aiming for top marks in a foundational course or looking to sharpen your skills in bioinformatics and research methodology, I am here to ensure you achieve your goals with confidence.
What My Students Say
"This class environment is SO challenging. Logan went out of his way to make sure we had a good learning environment. So many virtual discussions I had led me nowhere and no learning took place. This was not the case for this discussion. The use of Miro was so smart, and I believe other classes should use it! I can't say good enough things about Logan and JoLynn. They were fantastic! As someone who's taken this class previously, my experience with this class was 100% better than the previous semester."
— Undergraduate Student, Genetics 300-Level Course
100% of my students reported in an anonymous survey that I: explained material clearly, was knowledgeable on course topics, and treated students with respect.

My Teaching Method & Approach
I believe that mastering complex biological concepts is not about rote memorization, but about developing a mental model of how systems work, and speaking the 'language' of science. My approach is evidence-based and highly interactive. Drawing from my experience as a PhD candidate in Molecular Microbiology, I focus on identifying the "conceptual bottlenecks" where students typically struggle—such as understanding gene regulation, metabolic pathways, or genomic data interpretation—and breaking them down into intuitive, manageable components. I treat our sessions as collaborative scientific discussions rather than traditional lectures.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Every session is structured to ensure maximum value:
The Review (5–10 mins): We address any specific questions from your recent coursework, lecture notes, or lab assignments.
The Deep-Dive (30–40 mins): We tackle the core topic. I use digital whiteboarding to map out pathways, analyze data sets, or work through practice problems. I prioritize active learning and I will ask you to explain the concepts back to me to ensure mastery.
Synthesis & Strategy (10–15 mins): We apply what we've learned to exam-style questions or research applications. We wrap up by defining your study goals for the coming week to ensure you remain ahead of your curriculum.
What Sets Me Apart
I am not just an instructor; I am a practicing scientist. With 6 research publications, a GRFP Fellowship, and extensive experience mentoring undergraduates in the lab, I bring the "real world" of science into our sessions. My pedagogical effectiveness is backed by data: while teaching university-level genetics, I implemented a curriculum structure that raised my section’s average grade from an 83% to a 91%. I understand exactly what professors are looking for and how to help you meet those expectations.
Who These Lessons Are For
My mentorship is designed for high-achieving undergraduate and graduate students who are serious about academic and professional excellence.
My expertise is best suited for:
Students in "Weed-Out" Courses: Microbiology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry.
Pre-Professional Students: Pre-med, pre-dental, or pharmacy students who need an 'A' in rigorous science prerequisites.
Emerging Researchers: Students seeking guidance on lab protocols, bioinformatics workflows (RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, CRISPRi), or technical writing for papers and grant applications.
Professional Development: Students looking for advice on applying to graduate school, navigating lab dynamics, or preparing for high-level scientific presentations.
