About Julien

Bonjour! I am Julien, a French native speaker based in London who just finished his PhD!
I have been teaching French for five years and have helped students of all ages (so far from 3!!! to 67) with very different goals!

I tailor my lessons to the goals and requirements of my students: they can be about helping you to achieve pre-determined goals, helping you in your studies or simply about improving your French.
During my lessons, I do all the note-taking so you can actively engage!

I have helped many A-level, IB and GCSE students achieving top grades but also enjoy helping those adult learners who want to improve their conversational French, through regular and more informal discussions with the provision of detailed feedback on vocabulary and grammar.

I live in London and can therefore travel anywhere within Zone 1-3 to help you in person if yo wish so! Coffee shops are a great place to study in a relaxed and informal environment. Online lessons are also available!

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak french simply because I was born in France. However, my interest in teaching French has certainly been enhanced by encounters with several teachers. Studying literature and linguistic has enabled me to encountered people's whose appreciation of language has diverse origins: it's open my eyes to the fact that everyone has different reasons to love a language.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Victor Hugo, as an author has certainly an interesting relationship with the French language. The themes he cares about are also somehow incredibly French.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

The phrase "Impossible n'est pas un mot français" ought to be reminded to any french student when they struggle with their study.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It's an important point of contact with my family and some of my friends. It's also the language in which I conduct my research for my Phd and also, a language I love teaching.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The time commitment. Progresses are enhanced by an individual's commitment to reading, listening to and watch things in French. As a tutor, I consider my role to also be to provide guidance to students on selecting appropriate materials to consider outside of classes.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When learning English, I remember that learning more adverbs enhanced my understanding significantly. It's probably not a coincidence that I give all my students lists of adverbs to study.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

For the sake of my own research, I spent three months in Tunisia. This has significantly expended my understanding of french - a language which differs based on where it is spoken. I try to be mindful of this, and let students know when common alternatives to France's French are used elsewhere.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I am quite patient and can give a lot to students to do both during and outside of lessons. My lessons are engaging because they are mainly about the students and the language, and I pay attention to their needs and what they want to use French for!
