About Eleanor

My name is Ellie, and I am a History student at St John's College, Cambridge, from Colchester in Essex. I have just finished my second year of studies, and am about to travel to the University of Pavia, Italy to study Ancient History on a one year exchange programme.

I attended two grammar schools prior to University, Colchester County High School for girls and Colchester Royal Grammar School, where I gained 6 A-Levels and an EPQ. In this way, I am not only familiar with GCSEs and A-levels, but the grammar school and the University of Cambridge/Oxbridge admissions processes. I was among the first year to sit the new Cambridge History Admissions test, HAT, and had my fair share of practice interviews as well as of course the real thing (three in fact!)

I have experience teaching children aged 6-17; in July 2018, I travelled to China and taught English as a foreign language at two sequential summer camps. For this role I was required to construct from scratch a series of my own original 1-hour long lesson plans on a variety of subjects, including a presentation component, and speaking, listening, reading and writing games and exercises. The children were at times challenging to engage, because of the language barrier and some behavioural problems; I learnt very quickly how to cope in unforeseen circumstances, as well as how to adapt my lesson plans to English abilities ranging from none to near fluency.
