About Tristan

Hello,

I hope you are well.

I am currently completing my PhD thesis at the University of Auckland in contemporary poetry under the supervision of the poet Lisa Samuels; therefore, I am extremely passionate about literature and the arts in general. I have been a teacher and tutor of English language and literature for around ten years. I teach courses at a number of international institutions around the world, including the Institute of International Studies, Ramkhamhaeng University in Bangkok, and Hilderstone College, Broadstairs in the UK.

I have tought a number of undergraduate courses for subjects including, "Social Criticism in Literature," and "The Plays of William Shakespeare," "Critical Reading," and "Mythological Narratives in Literature."

I am also a qualified CELTA teacher and have prepared students for Cambridge and IELTS exams, as well as other examinations to ensure university entrance. I ensure that all of my students are motivated and prepared to obtain the best marks they possibly can.

I can provide excellent academic, personal and professional references from colleagues and students alike.

About the lesson

I tailor classes and courses to suit a student's particular needs. I have expertise in preparing people for university entrance exams, which include iGCSE, A level, IELTS etc. Therefore, these courses are focused on developing the skills required to pass academic exams, for example reading comprehension, essay writing and any relevant oral components.

However, I have also taught courses for undergraduates and postgraduates, in a number of subject areas, which encourage more critical reading techniques, in order to produce a robust appreciation. These courses are designed in order to develop critical thinking skills, and help guide a close reading of a text in a variety of critical or cultural contexts.

My background is in Comparative Literature, therefore, I employ the use of a variety of texts and sources from different mediums in order to illustrate thematic, styalistic and narrative conventions. It is my hope that my students will be able to evaluate any text and formulate an opinion as to its effectiveness in conveying its message, as well as engaging with its aesthetic qualities.

In short, I begin a course by establishing exactly what is required, and then design and facilitate a course to best acheive these outcomes.

In terms of my teaching style, I am friendly, approachable and commited to helping my students to the best of my abilities.

Details

The hourly rates that I have indicated are based on a session in which I tutor a single student. I am open to discussing rates for longer courses, or specialised workshops, which take into account the possibility of tutoring multiple students at one time.
I am happy to discuss these arrangements, and come to an agreement that is equitable to us all.
As I have a very tight schedule, I do require at least 24 hours notice of cancellation.
