About Jaikrishnan

I am a faculty at the Department of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. I have a PhD in Mathematics from the Indian Institute of Science and my thesis was awarded the Sir Martin Forster gold medal. I am passionate about teaching mathematics and have taught several courses at IISc and IIT Madras at both the bachelors as well as masters level. I have also been an instructor at several workshops for mathematics teachers.

About the lesson

Mathematics is the "Queen of the Sciences". But unfortunately her elegance is not appreciated by many. I want to change this. Mathematics is not difficult but teaching mathematics is. My aim is to teach the foundations of mathematics in a way that both highlights the impeccable elegance of the subject as well as dispels the "math-phobia" that has become an epidemic in our colleges. The only way to do this is to engage with the theory right from the foundational level. I will motivate every concept I teach with examples from the real world. But the central aim is to build a strong foundation that will be immensely useful regardless of which subject on Science or Engineering you plan to pursue.

This course is targeted at college students who want a deeper understanding of mathematics beyond what is usually taught in the curriculum at the bachelors level. Those who have already completed a bachelors degree but want to pursue higher studies where mathematics is useful are also encouraged to attend. If you are already pursuing mathematics at a bachelor's or master's level, you can attend the sample lecture and decide if you would like to attend.
