About Charlie

Hello, I'm Charlie! I am a passionate and highly qualified Classics teacher and tutor with experience guiding students from Key Stage 2 all the way through to A-Level and the International Baccalaureate. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Classics with First-Class Honours, am currently finishing a Masters of Arts in Antiquity, and am about to embark on a PhD in Classics, so you can rely on my knowledge of the subject to always be current and insightful.

My teaching philosophy is built on the belief that Classics should be dynamic, engaging, and relevant. I love to bring the ancient world to life in my lessons by incorporating interactive activities and modern technology to make learning fun. I’m committed to helping every student succeed, whether they are a complete beginner or an advanced learner preparing for university.

Beyond the classroom, I am dedicated to professional development and research. I've presented my work at the Classical Association Conference and regularly engage with academic journals. I'm also passionate about fostering well-rounded individuals and enjoy integrating my interests in creative arts, history, and games into my teaching. My goal is to build your confidence and help you not only achieve your academic goals but also develop a lifelong love for the subject. I look forward to working with you!

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is student-centered and tailored to the individual's needs. I combine high academic expectations with targeted support, helping students not only to understand the content but also to develop a love for learning. My techniques are informed by my experience teaching Classics across Key Stages 2-5, as well as educational research.

My approach:
I use methods like mini-quizzes, discussions, and student-led activities to encourage students to actively participate and take ownership of their learning.
I provide personalized feedback and adapt resources to different learning styles. For example, I helped an IB student improve from a grade 3 to a 6 (out of 7) in five months by focusing on their specific grammatical weaknesses.
I integrate examiners' reports into lessons to teach students how to identify and "flip" previous candidates' mistakes into rules for success. This empowers them to become resilient, self-assured learners.
I use digital tools to make lessons interactive and relevant. This includes using software like Sporcle for grammar consolidation and experimenting with AI to generate model answers for students to critique.

Lessons are typically one hour long, but this can be adjusted to the student’s needs.

I have extensive experience teaching Classics (Latin, Classical Greek, and Classical Civilisation) to students from Key Stage 2 to A-Level and IB, with a strong familarity for most course books for Latin, Ancient Greek and Classical Civilisation. I have taught to the OCR and IB specifications and am currently pursuing a master's and PhD in the subject. This ensures I bring fresh perspectives and up-to-date knowledge to my lessons.

I offer tutoring for students of all abilities, from beginner to advanced. Lessons are suitable for students from Key Stage 2 through to A-Level, IB, undergraduate and masters level. I specialize in the following:

Key Stage 2: Introducing Classics and ancient history.
Key Stage 3: Building foundational knowledge in Latin, Greek, and Classical Civilisation.
GCSE & A-Level: Preparing for exams in OCR Classical Greek, OCR Latin, and OCR Classical Civilisation.
IB: Tutoring for the IB Latin course.\
Undergraduate and masters: Developing essay-writing skills and cultivating an efficient approach to reading and studying.
