About Esther

I am a Classics graduate of Jesus College, University of Oxford, with 4 years of private tutoring and classroom teaching experience. While I read a Humanities subject at University and love teaching Classics (and related subjects like Latin and Archaeology), English, and History, I also have extensive experience tutoring students in Mathematics, Economics, and Biology. I am an IBDP alumna, and am familiar with all major examination boards (AQA, OCR, WJEC, Edexcel, Eduqas) for A level and GCSE examinations. I also have experience teaching English as a second language, and pupils with SEND (Au/DHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia).

I have mentored international and UK students hoping to gain admission into top UK universities, such as Oxford, Cambridge, and UCL. Having completed my undergraduate at the University of Oxford and receiving BA offers from King's College London, the University of Edinburgh, Durham University, and Queen Mary University of London, as well as MA offers from UCL and the Courtauld Institute of Art, I believe I am well-placed to advise students looking to gain admission at every stage of the academic application process.

I am also an Independent schools admissions specialist, mentoring 7+, 11+, 12+, and 13+ candidates to gain admission to Radley, Tonbridge, Marlborough College, Wycombe Abbey, Brighton College, and Latymer Upper School, as well as mentoring pupils enrolled at Lockers Park and Brighton Handcross prep.

I am also fully bilingual in English and Mandarin, and have tutored international students from Southeast Asia. While I believe in teaching in the language of examination, in this case, English, I believe my experience places me at an advantage tutoring prospective international students due to communicative ease with students and parents, as and when needed.

My credentials:
- Oxford Classics Graduate
- IBDP Graduate (HL English Literature, Economics, History; SL Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, Biology, French B) + 3/3 in TOK, EE in English Literature, CAS

My experience:
- Mentoring students on an individual basis for Oxford and Cambridge admission in subjects English Literature, Classics (including Cambridge 3-year course), History
- Provides tailored personal statement guidance, admissions tests revision (notably ELAT and HAT essay practice, CLAT linguistic problem-solving techniques, CAT translation help, TSA generalist advice), and interview preparation
- Mentored students through second-round 13+ English literature examinations for admission into Tonbridge, Radley, Harrow, and Marlborough schools, mentored students through selective 12+ examinations for entrance into Latymer Upper School
- Tutoring students on an individual basis in Mathematics (KS3 and GCSE), Latin (Lockers Park School), and English literature (Brighton College Prep Handcross)

Classroom:
- Delivered academic and pastoral support for bottom-set learners with mathematics and English on individual or small group basis, supported students with developing independence in working through problems and structuring essays
- Provided structured 1:1 support for an autistic Reception pupil during a placement as a SEND TA, assisting with speech and language therapy. Assisted general classroom activities and delivery of lessons for the entire class, including lessons for phonics and subitising
- Supervised and ensured the safety of multiple special needs students during lunchtimes and Christmastime activities, including immunocompromised pupils with visible and vulnerable healthcare apparatuses such as feeding tubes

My general teaching approach is that of exercising flexibility and patience. I communicate with students to tailor lesson plans around their individual needs and goals, as well as to subject-specific areas of focus as stipulated by the syllabus of the examination board. I strive to create a comfortable and open atmosphere during lessons and beyond, where students are unafraid to challenge themselves and make mistakes, by empowering students with confidence in their own abilities to learn and succeed.

I can provide one-on-one essay feedback on formative classroom work, mock written and oral examination practice, and works with her students to create their own personalised revision and learning plans. Where possible, I emphasise thorough understanding over simple rote-learning and regurgitation. In terms of language teaching, having learnt Latin from scratch myself at university, I am fully acquainted with the challenges of language acquisition on the full spectrum of abilities. I format language lessons to achieve the individual goals and needs of the student, whether that is simple conversational fluency—no reading of abstruse philosophical scholarship required—or success in standardised school language exams.

As best put by my own Latin tutor at university, “in errando discimus!” (by making mistakes, we learn!”)
