About Jonathan
Whether it's fiction or non-fiction that a student prefers, my role as their tutor is to assist in opening up the truths an author is trying to convey, and helping to gauge how successful they are in doing so. Printed books haven't been around for long, have they, and it's only a brief term in human history during which ordinary people have not only learned to read, but been able to afford to buy books of their own. I'm convinced that there's still much to be gained from owning and reading printed books, and engaging in a 'dialogue' with their authors - often extraordinary human beings in specific and extraordinary circumstances, finding a voice which helps us all to get through. If I can teach a student to value the written/printed word in this way, I believe they'll not only fly through their exams, but have an altogether better, more confident life.

With the right nurturing and attention (listening) all students can articulate strong verbal and written responses to individual texts and intellectual challenges. Shared reading aloud and discussion, rather than mere instruction, lead to personal investment in one's studies, and increasing self-confidence and maturity. It is essential for this tutor to read and respond to a student's written work - my lessons are 50 minutes only - the rest of the hour I'll take at home to copy-edit my student's work. (For this I have qualifications in both creative writing, and in copy-editing, besides my post-graduate certificate in education (English Language & Literature). I have taught in a variety of educational settings, principally 11-18 year olds, but also undergraduates at the University of Plymouth (2010-2015) and adults with the Workers Educational Association. I was part of the National Tutoring Programme more recently. I prefer face-to-face teaching, perhaps combined with some online stuff too.)
