About John

Hi, I’m John and I have an offer to study Classics at Oxford.

I am predicted 5 A*s at A-Level (Classical Civilisation, Latin, Ancient Greek, Philosophy and History), having achieved 12 9s at GCSE and an A* in my EPQ which I completed in Year 10 on Early Medieval England.

I have always loved Classics and enjoy nothing more than sharing my passion with others. In my capacity as Head Boy at a south London Grammar School, I was closely involved in providing support for younger students with their studies in Latin and Greek. Having just been through the process of learning and then being examined in a wide variety of Classical subjects, I have a first hand understanding of what is needed to both succeed in your university applications and exams, whilst also importantly still enjoying the incredible world of the Romans and Greeks!

About the lesson

My lessons are based entirely on bringing out the best in a student and helping them achieve their goals.

Learning Classical languages is a very individual process and involves working out what works for you. Having supported students through Classical GCSEs since I took them myself, I now base my lessons around giving students the guidance and tools they need to find out what their language journey looks like for them. Digital tools in particular, utilising spaced repetition and interleaving, played an important role in my own education and are now something I incorporate into my teaching to help language learning be both fun and effective!

My lessons tutoring Classical Civilisation GCSE and A-Level focus on both conveying the content in memorable ways by exploring the vast variety of sources the Classical World left behind, whilst also developing the extended writing and analytical skills needed to succeed.

I also can provide University Admissions support for Classical subjects, giving tailored guidance on Personal Statements, University written work, and interview preparation. These sessions vary greatly depending on the student, but can encompass anything from providing feedback on essay competition entries to arranging a schedule of mock interviews with experts in different areas of Classics. I am able to guide someone over a longer period to ensure that they achieve the immersion in Classics that can get you into the best universities in the world, or over a shorter period I can quickly help someone feel more confident and prepared for any submitted written work or interviews that are required for Oxbridge.
