About David
Applying to Oxford or Cambridge is a daunting prospect for many – but I’ve experienced the process from the inside out, both as an applicant and from within Oxford’s admissions process.
I graduated with First-Class Honours in Music from the University of Oxford in 2020, following the Oxford Foundation Year, which I completed on a full £25,000 scholarship. Coming from a comprehensive school in a deprived area of the southwest, where opportunities were scarce, I was one of the first students from my school to attend Oxbridge. These experiences give me particular insight into navigating competitive admissions from a non-traditional background.
The Foundation Year also gave me intensive mentoring from Oxford professors, application specialists, and interview coaches, including direct coaching in interview technique, academic discussion, and tutorial-style thinking.
I subsequently worked with Oxford’s admissions team for two consecutive years, invigilating admissions tests, coordinating with professors, supporting interview candidates, and helping with the administration and organisation of the interview process. This gave me an unusual perspective on Oxford admissions – both as a successful applicant and from within the admissions process itself.
I support students with personal statements, admissions tests, interview preparation, academic discussion, and broader application strategy. While I specialise particularly in Music, I am also happy to support applicants across other subjects where appropriate.
My approach is supportive but rigorous. The aim is not simply to rehearse answers or "tick the boxes", but to develop the intellectual confidence, curiosity, clarity of thought, and ability to respond thoughtfully to unfamiliar ideas that competitive interviews are designed to explore.

Sessions are highly tailored to the student and their stage of the application process.
For interview preparation, I use unseen material and Oxford-style questioning to replicate the experience of being presented with unfamiliar ideas and having to work through them aloud. I focus particularly on helping students develop the ability to pause, think critically, test an idea, respond to challenge, and change their mind when the evidence requires it.
For Music applicants, sessions can cover areas including harmony and analysis, score reading, historical musicology, aesthetics, critical theory, ethnomusicology, and broader academic discussion. I can also draw directly on my own Oxford tutorials and experience of the Music course when developing bespoke materials.
For personal statements and written work, I provide detailed, constructive feedback focused on argument, intellectual engagement, clarity, and academic depth rather than simply correcting wording.
For students who are earlier in the process, sessions can focus on understanding the Oxford or Cambridge environment, developing academic confidence, exploring their subject beyond the school curriculum, and building the habits of thought that will serve them well when the application process arrives.
My aim throughout is to make the preparation challenging but constructive: to help students become more confident thinkers rather than simply more rehearsed candidates.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
David is such a lovely person who is very passionate about his work as a teacher. Ever since I started lessons with him, my skill and understanding of the piano has increased significantly. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who was thinking of learning piano/everything else he teaches.
David was a very good teacher for my daughter Maddalena during her first few years of piano lessons. He kept her attention and interest alive through reading, exercises and improvisation. He has a joyful and playful way of teaching music, and children love it!
David has worked with my son for the last 2 years, tutoring him for his music GCSE. David has been a tremendous teacher in a fun but structured way. He has been a huge asset in dealing with the pressure of assessed performances and compositions and has made a great difference to my son's confidence as a musician. I would recommend David to anyone and am considering learning myself!
David is an outstanding teacher. Wherever you are at for each lesson, both mentally and in terms of your skills development, he is ready to meet you with just the right tools and approach. Fun, friendly, expert, whip smart and excellent at delivering real results, would recommend without any hesitation.
Our 8 year old adores David! We have had David come to ours for 2 years and what impresses me most is the balance between improv, set pieces, theory and silliness…! David understands that learning happens best when the child is having fun and engaged. He is very patient with children who get easily distracted, but also firm when needed. The improv duets are wonderful and fill the house with beautiful music.
Leonardo has been enjoying very much the classes with David. Even though Leonardo is young, David has managed to keep him enthusiastically engaged with the classes and he is very keen to keep learning piano. David has been easy to approach and very responsive to our queries. I will recommend his classes if you want your child to start learning piano around primary school age
My daughter says David is very helpful, patient, and funny! His enthusiasm is infectious and he tailors the piano lessons to her interest and skills.
"I like piano lessons with David because he is a great teacher and I can always choose the song I want to play. I recommend him to other children"
David has been an amazing piano teacher for Esme. She really enjoys the lessons, especially improvising. Playing music she has chosen is really motivating. She has made so much progress not only in technique but also her confidence. I'm really impressed by how David is able to make that happen
David was a patient and supportive teacher. He diligently worked with my daughter, who suffers from hearing loss and neurodiversity, taking time to explain to her everything that she needs to do and why. He tailored the lessons to her needs so that she not only got the most out of each but also enjoyed them. We have since left Oxford, but my daughter still practices in her own time using the techniques taught by David. Thank you, David
