About Devaux

My name is Laurence, a native French speaker and qualified teacher of French and Spanish with over 30 years’ experience in secondary education.
I have taught both languages up to A-Level in the state and independent sectors since 1996, including 13 years as Head of Spanish in a selective grammar school in Buckinghamshire, where my students consistently achieved strong GCSE and A-Level results. My teaching has also been recognised as outstanding, and I have contributed to training programmes focused on raising attainment and improving exam performance.
Alongside secondary teaching, I have extensive experience tutoring students of all ages and abilities, from primary school bilingual pupils to undergraduates and adults, with a particular focus on GCSE and A-Level success. Over the course of my career, I have delivered thousands of hours of one-to-one tuition in French and Spanish, supporting students in achieving consistently strong outcomes, including Scholarship preparation for selective independent schools (including ISEB Common Entrance).

About the lesson

My teaching approach is structured and fully focused on helping students make measurable progress in their French and Spanish exams. Each lesson is tailored to the individual, whether the priority is strengthening grammar, improving exam technique, or developing organisation and study skills.

Lessons are 60 minutes and carefully planned to be productive, focused and engaging. I encourage active participation throughout, so students are consistently applying the language rather than passively receiving information. Sessions typically combine targeted practice with exam-style questions and detailed feedback to build both confidence and accuracy.

A strong emphasis is placed on exam success, including regular use of past-paper-style questions, close work on mark-scheme requirements, and clear strategies for improving written and oral performance.

Where needed, I also support students in developing effective study habits, organisation and time management skills, particularly when dealing with exam pressure or the need for more structured support.

At the start of tuition, we agree on a clear, realistic plan based on the student’s strengths, areas for development and target outcomes.
