About Julie

I have been working with young people for over 25 years, initially starting out as a youth worker (including a wonderful job setting up and managing a county-wide project working with museums and galleries).

I never thought I would become a teacher - I hated school and couldn't wait to leave! Therefore, I can fully empathise with any students who are struggling with school.

However, when I went back into education in my late 20s (BA Hons English and History at the University of Surrey), I absolutely loved studying.

I worked as a Teaching Assistant before doing my teacher training and qualifying in 2009. I have been fortunate to work in a variety of schools since and have learnt a lot along the way. My last two schools were both ‘outstanding’, and I contributed heavily to the inspections of these.

Teaching in a specialist provision, I gained a lot of knowledge and skills relating to additional needs. I have also had the privilege of teaching in a therapeutic provision, so have mental health expertise too. I am particularly good at supporting anxious learners.

In addition to being a classroom teacher, I have leadership and management experience – but I just love teaching!

About the lesson

My 16+ years of experience as a qualified teacher includes secondary mainstream (KS3, KS4 and KS5), specialist (11-16), and a therapeutic provision (11-18). Regularly judged as 'outstanding', I can happily adapt my teaching to support any student, from struggling readers to those aiming for grade 9 in GCSE. I also teach Functional Skills and would be open to tutoring adults as well as adolescents.

I am kind, patient and highly skilled at personalising your learning. My aim will be to get to know what you want/need and find out what works (or doesn't work) for you, so that I can adapt my teaching accordingly to help you achieve your goals as quickly as possible.

All certificates are available to view. I am DBS checked with a current safeguarding certificate, and I can supply references.

I am happy to have an initial (free with no pressure or obligation) chat on the phone or Zoom (or similar) if you want to have a discussion and ask any questions.
