About Derek

I am a passionate teacher and researcher with diverse teaching experiences in organic chemistry in several university settings across the United States and with students of all backgrounds and majors. I have professional interests and multiple peer-reviewed publications spanning the research disciplines of synthetic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, and drug discovery-particularly in the areas of cancer and neuroscience.

My older brother and sister are both teachers and coaches (high school level). Thus I feel that imparting wisdom and helping others achieve is a part of who I am and is an overall mutually rewarding human endeavor that transcends age, culture, and personal backgrounds and experiences.

About the lesson

My overall goal is to enhance your understanding of organic chemistry to enable you to achieve your course goals, regardless of your major or career focus-I want to help you get to where you want to go!

Organic chemistry is a highly visual science, and thus a typical lesson plan may include drawing/viewing chemical structures to discuss reactivity patterns and reaction mechanisms, in addition to reviewing reactivity profiles of functional groups and their relevant synthetic transformations-many of which I have performed myself in a laboratory setting over the years as a professional synthetic organic chemist.

I personalize my teaching methods to the learning preferences of the individual and particular topic of interest (e.g., stereochemistry, NMR, retrosynthetic analysis, etc.) within the broad area of collegiate level organic chemistry.

My experience (~15 years) interacting and effectively communicating with undergraduate, graduate (M.S./Ph.D.) , and postdoctoral students from all over the world sets me apart from the average online organic chemistry tutor. Moreover, I value your time and am confident that I can help you succeed!
