About Maya

Hi, I'm Maya! I love working with children and youth to help them feel confident and capable in school! I'm a certified teacher who has been tutoring for over 7 years now. I love being in the classroom, but I also understand that many students need a little 1-on-1 time with an educator to fully develop their abilities. Having the opportunity for extra time to go over a concept or idea is often all students need to consolidate their learning. I'd love to be that person for your child! Since I've been working in schools, I've noticed that many students are missing foundational literacy and math skills which is making school difficult and unenjoyable for them. My goal is to equip students with the building blocks for reading and Math so that have an understanding of the essentials they need to feel confident learning new and more complex skills.

About the lesson

My main goal as a tutor is to boost confidence and create a passion for learning! I do so by teaching the building blocks of literacy and math. Giving students the basic tools they need to understand their learning, rather than just memorizing information. As a certified teacher, my math and literacy lessons are guided by what students are doing in the classroom. Typically, I'll look through the work that your child is doing in class and ensure I'm working on material that will build skills and confidence in their class. My lessons are structured differently for each student but include games, worksheets, metacognition activities, and lots of hands-on learning experiences. I've worked with different students, grades K-8, who are struggling with literacy. For students working on reading, I find it best to focus on phonological awareness, reading comprehension, and letter sounds to help students develop confidence and a love for reading. To focus on writing we play games, write stories, and create journals. When teaching math my strategy is to make lessons relatable to the student's life. I break subjects down to focus on the basics before moving to higher cognitive processes, ensuring students have a grasp of the concept, not solely memorizing steps. I work with an array of students and adapt my lessons to suit their needs where I, the parents, and their classroom teacher see best fit.
