About Adam
As a professional composer and educator, I offer far more than just lessons. I offer real-world experience, proven expertise, and a deep passion for helping musicians grow.
My name is Adam Zolty. I am a Canadian composer with a Master of Music in Composition with distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in London, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of British Columbia. My work has been performed across Canada, the United States, and Europe, and has been recognized with major awards including the Socan Foundation’s 2018 Serge Garant Award for Young Composers and the 2025 Priaulx Rainier Composition Prize.
I currently teach music theory, composition, orchestration, counterpoint, and musicianship online, drawing from years of professional practice in both academic and freelance settings.
Why Study With Me?
I am not only trained in theory, I actively use it at the highest professional level as a composer.
My opera The Manicurist was featured at Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival in 2024. Meeting professional deadlines, writing for esteemed performers, and hearing my work premiered internationally has practically shaped how I understand and teach composition.
In addition to composing, I have extensive experience in score engraving, orchestration, and arranging for professional composers and performers. I work fluently in Dorico and Finale, and I teach students how to produce clean, industry-standard scores. If you want to understand not only how music works, but how to present it professionally, I can guide you step by step.
My Teaching Philosophy:
Music theory is the key to powerful creativity, whether you’re performing or composing. I make complex ideas clear and inspiring, and show exactly how they work in the music we hear and play.
Whether you are an absolute beginner, preparing for conservatory auditions, studying for exams, learning orchestration, developing your compositional voice, strengthening harmony or counterpoint skills, seeking guidance on notation software and score preparation - I tailor lessons to suit your goals and needs.
Who I Am:
I am dependable, hardworking, and deeply committed to artistic excellence. Having grown up in a family of professional dancers, I am especially sensitive to movement and expression in music. I believe music should feel alive, intentional, and embodied, and I bring that perspective into every lesson.
As an internationally active composer with experience in the UK, Canada, and the United States, I bring a global perspective to my teaching.
If you are serious about improving your musicianship and working with a tutor who is both academically trained and professionally active, I would be delighted to work with you!

My teaching is tailored to each individual student. Whether you are a complete beginner or prepping for university or conservatoire entrance exams, I got you covered!
Music theory, counterpoint, and orchestration are living tools for artistic expression. My goal is to help students not only understand concepts intellectually, but how to apply them confidently in their own music-making.
My lessons include:
• Clear explanations of theoretical concepts
• Analysis of repertoire
• Exercises and technical drills (harmony, voice-leading, counterpoint)
• Score reading and orchestration practice
• Constructive, detailed feedback on your work
For beginners to intermediate students I can build strong foundations in rhythm, notation, harmony, analysis, and ear training.
For advanced and conservatoire-level students, I can provide:
• Theory and musicianship tutoring and support
• Portfolio development
• Lessons in orchestration, counterpoint, and contemporary techniques
• Professional score presentation for the composer
• Preparing for entrance exams and interviews
Lessons are always goal-oriented and structured to support your creative direction.
Typical lesson length is 60 minutes. This allows time for reviewing previous material, introducing new concepts, working through exercises together, and setting clear goals for the next session.
Qualifications & Experience:
I hold a Master of Music in Composition with distinction from the Royal Academy of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Composition from the University of British Columbia.
My music has been performed internationally, and I have written commissioned works for professional ensembles and soloists. I am also an experienced score engraver and orchestrator, having prepared and edited scores for composers and university faculty.
In addition to composing, I have years of experience mentoring peers, assisting composers professionally, and working closely with performers - all of which inform my teaching.
I teach students of all levels (teenagers through adults), including:
• Complete beginners
• GCSE / A-Level music students
• ABRSM / RCM theory candidates
• Undergraduate music students
• Aspiring composers and composition majors
• Conservatoire applicants
• Adult learners returning to music
If you are serious about improving your musicianship whether for exams, university preparation, or artistic growth, I will provide the structure, expertise, and encouragement to help you succeed!
