About James

I'm James, a British English teacher. I hold a TEFL certificate and a Business English certification, and I've taught English online for five years. Before that I spent two years teaching in China, from beginners through to learners sitting the Cambridge Business English exam, while studying Chinese at university.

I spent over five years in project and programme management in the nonprofit sector, writing proposals, running stakeholder meetings, and handling the day-to-day of professional communication. If you need English for work, I'll be able to help.

I'm also a language learner. I've studied French, Chinese, Spanish, Persian, and Portuguese, to varying degrees, so I know how it feels to study hard and still go blank when someone asks you a question. That's the gap my lessons are designed to close, and I've spent a long time working out how to close it.

Outside of teaching I play music, read constantly, and keep learning languages. I'm genuinely curious about other countries and cultures, so wherever you're from, we'll have plenty to talk about.

About the lesson

Still can't speak English fluently? Most people study English for years at school but still struggle to use it in a real conversation, or to follow native speakers when they talk. Every time you speak, you have to build the sentence in your head while the conversation keeps moving, and the words don't come fast enough. My lessons are built specifically for that problem.

Each lesson is a conversation about topics that interest you. As you speak, I note down the phrases that could sound more natural, and at the end we go through them together. I show you the upgrade: the way a native speaker would say the same thing, and how to build sentences and think in English rather than translating.

What happens between lessons is just as important. Everything we work on goes into a shared spreadsheet, and after each session I build you a personalised flashcard deck on a platform designed for long-term memory, so you can recognise and use everything that we study. I also suggest a video, podcast, article, or book to enjoy during the week, which gives you practice and gives us something to talk about next time.

A typical lesson is 50 minutes. In the trial, we'll talk about your situation and your goals, I'll show you exactly how I teach, and you'll leave with two or three phrases you didn't have before.
