About Stefan

Stefan Nestoroski was born in 1992 in Struga, Macedonia, and started playing the accordion at the age of 7. He studied accordion performance at the Music High School DMU "Todor Skalovski – Tetoec" from 2007 to 2011. He continued his accordion performance studies at the Academy of Music, Dance, and Fine Arts in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, graduating in 2015. In addition to classical and variety music, he also studied Bulgarian folk music. Since September 2015, he has served as an accordion teacher at the Music High School. Throughout his education, he has had regular performances both as a soloist and as a member of chamber ensembles at various concerts, festivals, and competitions. He has also actively participated in judging panels at numerous competitions at the republic, national, and international levels. His students frequently perform at concerts and important events, achieving numerous accolades at both national and international accordion competitions. Stefan also leads his own band, which specialises in performing Balkan folk music, and has performed at numerous festivals and private parties.

About the lesson

First of all: I am going to be your teacher all the time, sending videos, providing feedback on your submitted videos, and answering your questions consistently. Teaching Style I am an experienced, friendly, and patient accordion teacher. I offer lessons in classical, variety, and traditional folk music from the Balkans and Southeast Europe, including Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Serbia. I have extensive experience teaching both children and adults of all ages. The content of my didactic programme includes: • Posture improvement • Finger positioning in songs • Touch and expression • Technical optimisation, including both generic techniques and specific techniques for the right and left hand • Proper usage of the bellows • Agility and technical performance enhancement • Selection of the best songs to build an impressive repertoire • Finger-strengthening exercises, and more My main goals as a teacher are: • Encourage my students to be independent and creative. • Establish effective and quality practice habits for my students. • Teach musical interpretation and analysis. • Focus on conveying emotions and storytelling through music by emphasising expression and dynamics. • Assist students in overcoming stage fright and building confidence during performances in front of an audience. • Foster student participation in ensemble performances, guiding them to play in synchronisation with other musicians. The lessons are great because not only is Stefan extremely patient, but very encouraging and takes time to correct the little things that really make a huge difference to the ease of playing. Very quickly i have become much better and far more confident with the bass. I am also finally able to keep the rhythm going in the left hand without much work. This is something I really thought I would never get … but with his help and advice its just coming naturally. Thank you !!!

When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?
When I was 6 years old, my grandfather gave me an accordion and enrolled me in accordion lessons. I will be forever grateful to him for that.
Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
I generally listen to any music where the accordion is involved (Balkan folk music, Tango, French Musette and etc…), it never gets old for me.
Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
The most difficult course that I can give to the students, would be, for them to be independent of accordion lessons in the future and thus be able to create their own fingering, dynamics, phrasing, play by ear, etc.
What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
Each instrument is difficult but also beautiful in some way. Even though I am an accordionist and probably biased, I still think that the accordion is one of the most difficult instruments. You have to be meticulous and careful with the right hand (keys), bellows (quality - soul of the sound), left hand (bass). However, it is worth learning the accordion, considering that playing on accordion is like being a "one man band". Also, accordion is one of the few instruments that you actually hug in order to play it.
What are your keys to success?
I look to focus on the needs of my students and I found out that patience and calmness can go a long way towards showing them the right way in learning the accordion.
Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favorite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.
Richard Galliano - best known for his many accordion jazz albums and tango performance.

Petar Ralchev - master of Bulgarian and Balkan folk music.

Frédéric Deschamps - world renowned accordion teacher and performer.

These are my heroes/role models, each one of them in their respectable genre and seeing/hearing them play in that empty bar, with the morning light shining through the cracks of the painted glass windows and the acoustics, is the epitome of nirvana.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
When I was 10 years old, I was supposed to play in a school concert. I was very nervous, and I forgot to unclip the bottom part of the bellows of the accordion. Somehow I successfully played the whole composition, but with a lot of troubles. After that I never forget to unclip the bellows.
What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
First of all, I am friend with my students before being their mentor, that way the feedback I get is genuine and I can emphatically connect with them on a different level and immediately know when something isn't getting to them, when they are having a bad day or just be proud when they get the composition right and the smile that follows that brightens my day.
