About Frederick

I’m a social anthropologist and educator with a deep interest in how people learn to think about society, culture, and the self. I recently completed my PhD in Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, where I also supervised undergraduates in theory and methods. My academic path began with a BA in Anthropology and Linguistics at SOAS, followed by an MPhil at Cambridge, and has taken me through years of fieldwork and teaching in Greece, the UK, and now Berlin. What drew me to anthropology — and what keeps me teaching — is the sense that social science gives us tools to see the world differently. I enjoy helping students make sense of complex theories and showing how abstract ideas connect to everyday life. My style is patient, conversational, and attentive: I take time to understand where each student is coming from, what motivates them, and how they learn best. Beyond academia, I have a broad interest in the arts and cultural life more generally. I’ve worked on collaborative research projects with artists and educators, produced podcasts and workshops, and written on questions of form, representation, and social imagination. These experiences have shaped how I teach — creatively, critically, and with an openness to different ways of knowing. Whether you’re preparing for exams, writing essays, or simply trying to grasp what makes society work, I aim to make our sessions a space for genuine learning and curiosity.

My approach to tutoring begins with curiosity — both yours and mine. Before diving into theory or terminology, I want to understand what first drew you to the social sciences: what questions you ask about the world, and what ideas have already caught your attention. I believe that learning is most effective when it connects to personal interests and existing forms of understanding, rather than being imposed from above. In practice, this means that each lesson is tailored to you. I don’t follow a single fixed curriculum but work from your course materials, assignments, or areas of difficulty. A typical session might begin with a conversation around a concept or reading you’re struggling with, followed by a step-by-step breakdown of key arguments, and then a short written or diagram-based exercise to consolidate understanding. I use comparison, visualisation (such as kinship diagrams or conceptual maps), and plain-language explanation to demystify complex theories. When relevant, I draw on ethnographic examples from my own research to show how abstract ideas take on meaning in practice. My teaching style combines patient explanation with critical discussion. I want students to feel confident asking “obvious” questions and to leave each session not just knowing more, but thinking differently. I emphasise analytical clarity, structured essay writing, and making theoretical arguments relevant to everyday life. When preparing students for exams or coursework, I focus on helping them synthesise information rather than memorise it — building their ability to connect authors, debates, and examples across topics. Lessons typically last between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the student’s needs and attention span. For longer-term students, I often assign short reading or writing exercises between sessions, which we then discuss together. I hold a PhD and MPhil in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge, as well as a BA in Anthropology and Linguistics from SOAS. Over the past several years, I have supervised undergraduate students in Anthropological Theory at Cambridge, run reading groups and seminars, and taught across a range of topics in anthropology, sociology, and social theory. My lessons are suited for A-Level, undergraduate, and postgraduate students in Anthropology, Sociology, or related Social Sciences, as well as those seeking help with essay writing, research methods, or general academic skills. I also welcome motivated sixth-form students preparing for university entry in the social sciences. Ultimately, my goal is to make the social sciences intelligible, relevant, and even enjoyable — to help you find your own voice within the conversation they open up.
