About Pauline

Experienced in videoconferencing and Skype lessons. It is important to maintain regular work even when attending school is not possible. I am a native fully qualified teacher of French who has lived and worked in Cambridge and London. Passionate about languages and cultures, I do my best to share this enthusiasm with the students I teach. I have gathered extensive experience over the past 20 years and currently work in a well-known independent school in North London, teaching pupils from 12 to 18. All the inspections I have had in my teaching career have judged my lessons as "outstanding". I was Head of Department for 15 years, and am an examiner for two boards of examination at Advanced level. I currently organise and run a festival of French Drama; I also have experience in professional translation and interpreting. I was lectrice at Trinity College (Cambridge) and have coached many students for Oxbridge, so I have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of entry requirements. I have extensive experience in interview preparation, and I have created many sample papers based on the MLAT one in order to give students extra practice for the written test too. Over the past 5 years, all but one of the students I have tutored for Oxbridge entrance have received a place. I am a patient and fun professional, and know how to tailor a lesson to suit specific needs. I incorporate games, literature, cinema and theatre when and where relevant. I motivate and reassure students; they grow in confidence and make excellent progress. • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a native French speaker, born in Paris. I was always interested in languages; am now trilingual and I have lived in the UK over half of my life. Over the years, I have studied English, Spanish, Arabic, Finnish, Portuguese and Russian and though I am not fluent in all these languages, the notions I possess are enough to enlighten my knowledge and understanding of languages.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Victor Hugo would have to be the most emblematic French author in my eyes. Not only is his poetry exceptional, his novels still resound nowadays- "Les Mis" actually being based on one of his most iconic pieces. His writing is intrinsically French: bald, political, but so full of imagery and so deeply moving.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

"On ne voit bien qu'avec le coeur; l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux". Extracted from the scene between the fox and the prince in "Le Petit Prince" by Antoine de St Exupéry, this line resounds all the deeper in our society of appearance. Knowledge, a heart, compassion, are so much greater than looks. What is inside is so much more valuable than what we show.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

French is my home language. I grew up in France, learnt its tricky grammar in French primary schools, developed a passion for its literature through Maupassant, Zola, Hugo and Verlaine. Played with its words alongside Apollinaire and Pérec. Sang its words through Fauré and Rameau. And now teach its cinema, its history and its theatre as part of my lessons.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
French grammar, and French verbs in particular, are difficult to master. Memorizing the tricks is helped by clear explanation, repetition, use of authentic resources, use of media, use of films/ series and kinaesthetic practice. Differentiation and repetition are the key to solid long-term learning.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Aged 10, I was cast as the Little Prince is a Franco- Arabic school production of the piece. Forty years on I can still remember the lines- I believe that acting fosters a different aspect of language learning and definitely helps. This was the reason behind my creating the Festival de Théâtre francophone lycéen, a competition which is now 8 years old and flourishing amongst London French Sixth forms.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

As I child, I lived in Abu Dhabi for a few years. Living in the UAE was instrumental in my learning Arabic, a language I probably would not have considered studying otherwise. Back then, speaking a bit of Arabic allowed me to play and interreact with local children. After all, a language is not a school subject, but a skill (for life) used by people to communicate!
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have been a Language teacher in British schools for over 28 years. My teaching is dynamic, differentiated, fun, varied and inclusive. The techniques I have developed and the experience I have gathered over the years ensure I focus on the student's needs in order to foster progress. My students become language curious, gain confidence and improve considerably.
