About NICK

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have now been tutoring since 2006. In this time, I have helped students in many different situations, and with a wide variety of requirements. Every student is different, and I aim to be flexible in my approach, adapting to each individual's needs. The foundation of my tutoring is a solid subject knowledge to a high level, which enables me to see quickly where a student can improve their own knowledge and understanding in the subject.

Why am I a full-time tutor? While completing my teacher training qualification, I had the opportunity to teach students in two different ways. Of course, I taught students in the normal medium to large size classes, but I also tutored students individually and in small groups. I found that the approaches and skills needed in each of these two situations were very different.

I found that, overwhelmingly, individual and small group tutoring was more beneficial for the student, as well as being more enjoyable for me personally. As a result I decided to become a professional tutor.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I have a full enhanced CRB disclosure.

I am a professional, full-time maths tutor, specialising in providing one-on-one A-Level tuition. I also offer tuition to students studying towards a degree with a mathematical or statistical element, and GCSE tuition.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach maths, or anything with a significant mathematical element. This includes:

at GCSE or IGCSE, maths and statistics;
at AS-Level, A-Level or Cambridge Pre-U, I cover all modules: pure maths (core and further pure), and applied maths (statistics, mechanics and decision);
at degree level, the content of a maths degree, or the mathematical or statistical content of a non-maths degree.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a Ph.D. (doctorate) in maths (which involved conducting in-depth academic research into a specialist area of the subject) together with a first-class honours degree in maths from the University of Warwick. I also obtained A grades in both A-Level and GCSE maths.

I have a PGCE teacher training qualification.

- How much do you charge?

My current hourly fee for individual tuition is £40. This includes all travel costs. A discounted per person hourly fee is available for group sessions.

- Where do you teach?

Normally my tuition takes place in the student's home. However, alternative arrangements may be available: just ask, and I will try to accommodate your needs.

If you live within 45 minutes of Andover, I can offer you tuition. The areas of Hampshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire I cover include Winchester, Newbury, Salisbury, Marlborough, Basingstoke and Southampton.

- When are you available?

I can offer tuition during weekdays (daytime and evening).

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I tutor from school year 11 and upwards, including degree level and adult tuition.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Any qualification with a significant mathematical or statistical element.

Examples include: GCSE and IGCSE; AS-Level, A-Level and Cambridge Pre-U; University entrance exams (for example, STEP or Oxford entrance exams); Mathematical courses studied as part of a degree; Actuarial exams.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I can offer online tuition via Skype.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Many maths tutors are either school teachers doing a favour for those that need extra help, or university students trying to fill some spare time. Such tutors can often make progress in helping a student to understand maths. However, because one-on-one tutoring is not their primary activity there will usually be a limit to what they can achieve.

I aim to offer a service which goes beyond this. I am a professional, full-time maths tutor, and have been providing one-on-one tuition to students for over ten years. I believe that I can help anyone, whatever their current level, make significant improvements in their abilities and understanding.

My experience, together with my qualifications, give me an expert subject knowledge which I have used to help many students reach their maximum potential in what can be a very challenging area.
