About Sofia

I am a third-year undergraduate student at Whitman College, pursuing a bachelor's in Neuroscience, with a minor in Chemistry. At Whitman, I work as a student career advisor, with the goal of helping my peers present their best selves to employers. In helping students apply for jobs, internships, and grants, I have a high success rate in terms of how many students are able to obtain the positions they apply to after seeking my help with writing or interview preparation. I am an approachable and caring person, and make sure to provide feedback in a constructive and empathetic manner. As an aspiring researcher, I am passionate about writing and helping others with their writing skills. I have experience writing and editing manuscripts, and I especially enjoy reading scientific and creative writing. As someone who values collaboration, I center my teaching around working with my peers as a team. Although analytical writing is not the major focus of my education, I engage in writing and editing daily both for my major, and in my position as a career advisor. I am motivated by seeing others succeed, and helping in the process of building confidence in one's ability to tell stories through writing. About the lesson

Having worked as a career advisor at my university for over a year, I am well-equipped to assist students in the process of applying to jobs, colleges, or improving writing skills in general. I am enthusiastic about helping others increase their confidence in their ability to market themselves to employers or universities. I have extensive experience helping my peers review resumes, cover letters, and personal statements for graduate schools. I also have experience helping students apply for competitive scholarships and grants. Therefore, I can help in three main realms: job and internship applications, college counseling (applying to undergraduate and graduate schools), and general writing skills (working through school assignments).

When helping students with their writing, I often like to give the opportunity for any questions before we get started on any feedback. I pride myself in tailoring lessons to the individual, where we can work on any area you feel particularly unsure about, anywhere from proofreading an essay, to working on writing structure or flow. Bring writing assignments of any subject, and I am happy to work with you to ensure your message comes across in a clear, concise, and capturing manner.

As an open-minded and encouraging individual, I stress the importance of providing both positive and constructive feedback. We all have strengths and weaknesses; writing is about being aware of both, and using your strengths to effectively communicate your argument or story. My coaching is all about problem-solving, where we can work as a pair to brainstorm and smooth out any uncertainties.

I offer coaching to anyone from K-12 to undergraduate students; any and all writing levels are welcome. I can especially assist high school students who are applying to colleges and need help with writing or proofreading college essays.
