  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

This fluency in Arabic, and specifically my dialect, Shaami Arabic stems from where I come from. I am Palestinian and Arabic is part of my life. At my home, neighbourhood, and daily interactions. Growing up, it was part of my very being. It was also part of the way I thought, imagined, and expressed emotions. This, in combination with my desire to become a teacher, allows me to impart upon students’ knowledge that includes rhythm and culture that gives Levantine Arabic so much life and colour.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

One artist I think of is none other than the legendary Lebanese singer herself, Fairuz. The voice of this singer carries within it the soul of our Levantine culture, our poetry, our longing, our hospitality, and our resilience. She managed to spread and preserve our dialect and language, showing its potential to express everything from deep love to deep longing and sentimentalism through our language.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I love the word “yisalem eideki” - it literally means 'may your hands be safe', but we use it to express gratitude for any kind gesture. It reflects the warmth and hospitality central to Levantine culture. Another favourite is how we use “ya'teek el-'afye” - 'may you be given wellness' - to thank someone for their effort and labour. These phrases show how our language weaves blessing and care into everyday interaction.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Arabic is part of my cultural heritage and my individual identity. Aside from the individual value that the dialect has on a personal capacity, I am also quite firm on the value that this dialect has on a universal scale. After all, this could mark a connection with the cities, the literature, and the millions of people in West Asia. By studying this dialect, I could possibly bridge the gap between cultures.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the process of learning?

The main learning difficulty is that Shaami Arabic is quite different from MSA, and even within the Levantine dialect there are differences. For students, it may be overwhelming because of its informal nature and lack of standardised resources. In addition to classes with me, immersion through media consumption – music, series, YouTube – is what helps most. Also, taking a conversational approach from the first day on, instead of getting bogged down with all the stringent MSA rules from the outset; then again, understanding that people just make mistakes. I create a relaxed environment where they practise real-life scenarios immediately.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

As I grew up, my grandmother would tell me wonderful stories in the most beautiful Arabic, with a wealth of proverbs and sayings that I don’t hear elsewhere. I asked my grandmother, when I was a little kid, what a specific old proverb meant, and she would take an hour talking to me, not just about the words, but the background and wisdom behind them. At that point, I came to realise that our dialogue is not merely a means of talking; it’s a repository of our wisdom. This, therefore, was my lesson to be cognisant that language instruction is synonymous with storytelling, which is largely my approach to the task.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Coming to the UK marked a significant milestone in my experience with Arabic. Moving from home made me realise and appreciate even further how important and interlinked this language is to my own self-identity. The fact that I found myself craving to speak and hear my own dialect, watch Arabic media shows and programmes, and associate with fellow Arabic speakers solely for conversational purposes made me realize the unbreakable link between myself and this language. The experience of being away also made me reflect and see this beautiful language through foreign eyes. Living abroad transformed me from a native speaker into a conscious guardian of the language, and it deepened my appreciation for teaching it to others who want to connect with Levantine culture, whether for heritage, travel, or personal enrichment. This experience of longing and rediscovery is what fuels my passion as a teacher today.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have native fluency combined with true teaching passion. I'm not merely interested in imparting language and linguistic knowledge. I'm interested in culture and context. My teaching methods are built around each student's needs, whether your goal is to reconnect with heritage, prepare for travel, or enhance your professional life. Importantly, I want to ensure you not only learn Arabic; I want you to fall in love with the culture.
