About Junko

Hi! I’m Junko from Nagoya, Japan! I’m a native Japanese speaker with 10+ years of teaching experience, and I’ve also worked in Public Relations at Honda and Yahoo Japan.
I love connecting with people from different cultures, and I’m a passionate traveler who has explored many parts of the world…♪
I’m curious, open-minded, and genuinely enjoy getting to know people and hearing their stories. For me, language is more than words, it’s a way to connect with people, culture, and new perspectives!
I’d love to share Japan with you while learning about your world, too.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Japanese is my native language. I was born and raised in Nagoya, Japan, so Japanese has always been a natural part of my life. But I also became fascinated by how language connects people, cultures, and ways of thinking. That interest eventually led me to teach Japanese in English to people from all over the world!
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language’s culture?

I would choose Hayao Miyazaki. His films beautifully express many aspects of Japanese culture and the Japanese way of seeing the world, like the connection with nature, attention to small details, quiet emotions, and the idea that not everything has to be explained directly.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I love the Japanese word 「お疲れ様です」(otsukaresama desu). There isn’t one perfect English translation. We use it to acknowledge someone’s effort, work, or simply the fact that they have been doing their best.
I think it says a lot about Japanese culture: sometimes you don’t need a big compliment. Simply recognizing and respecting someone’s effort can mean a lot!
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Japanese is more than just my native language, it is a connection to my culture and the way I grew up.
I also love seeing my students become more confident when they can have their first real conversation in Japanese. Being able to communicate with someone local can open a completely different door to a culture and to people!
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Japanese has several challenges for English speakers, especially the three writing systems, sentence structure, particles, and different levels of politeness.
But! I believe the biggest key is actually using the language from the beginning. You don’t have to wait until your Japanese is perfect.
My lessons focus on practical conversation, pronunciation, natural expressions, and understanding why Japanese people say things in a certain way. I also adjust the lessons to each student’s goals and personality.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

One thing I remember from school is how much Japanese students learn indirectly through everyday routines, for example: greetings, cleaning the classroom, school events, eating lunch together, and working as a group.
When I started teaching Japanese to people outside Japan, I realized that many of these cultural details are actually fascinating to people learning the language.
That’s why I don’t want my lessons to be just about grammar. I love sharing the little cultural things that make Japanese feel more real and understandable.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Living in the United States has actually given me a completely different perspective on my own language and culture.
For more than 10 years, I have worked and lived between Japanese and English-speaking environments. Teaching Japanese to people from different countries has also taught me how differently people understand the same words and expressions.
It made me realize that knowing a language isn’t only about knowing the vocabulary, it’s about understanding the culture behind it...!
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I am a native Japanese speaker with 10+ years of teaching experience, and I have also spent many years working in international environments.
Before becoming a teacher, I worked in PR and event coordination at Honda and Yahoo! Japan, so I understand both professional and everyday Japanese.
I have taught students from many different backgrounds, and I always try to make my lessons relaxed, practical, and personalized. My goal is not simply to teach you Japanese, it’s to help you feel comfortable &
    confident using Japanese.
And yes, mistakes are absolutely welcome in my lessons. That’s how you learn!
