About Azalea

Hi! I’m Azalea, a multilingual language tutor and Anthropology student at the University of Toronto, with years of tutoring experience and a deep passion for helping students build real confidence in Mandarin Chinese. As a self-taught speaker of Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese, I understand exactly what it takes to learn a new language from the ground up—and how to make the process both effective and enjoyable. Every student is different, so I tailor my lessons to individual needs, goals, and learning styles—whether you’re a total beginner, preparing for exams, or learning Chinese for travel or conversation. I also assign creative homework so you don't have to waste time droning through boring content and end up retaining very little of it (trust me, I've been there). I pride myself on being patient, adaptable, and encouraging. You’ll find my lessons structured yet flexible, challenging yet supportive. About the lesson

As a passionate polyglot and experienced tutor, I approach language learning as both an art and a skill—something intuitive, immersive, and personal.
I speak as little English as possible during lessons, aiming to replicate how native speakers naturally acquire language: through context, repetition, and meaningful use, rather than translation drills.
This leads to a deeper, more sustainable grasp of Chinese.

That said, every student is different—and I tailor each lesson to fit their goals, learning style, strengths, and weaknesses. Whether a student is learning Chinese for school, work, travel, or cultural exploration, I adjust the pace, focus, and structure to best support their journey. Some need visual aids or grammar scaffolding; others thrive with challenge and conversation. I’m here to meet them where they are.

My lessons typically include a warm-up in Mandarin, a review of past material through active use, new content delivered through stories or roleplay, and a short cultural segment. I love assigning creative homework—like recording skits, reacting to Chinese media, or designing your own dialogues—to push students beyond the textbook and into real-life language.

As a self-taught learner of Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese, I understand what it means to build fluency from scratch. I aim to create a space where students feel encouraged, challenged, and empowered to think in Chinese—not just memorise it.
