About Zachary

I earned my Bachelor's of Music in Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation from The School of Music, Theatre and Dance at The University of Michigan. Before, during, and after my time at Michigan, I've remained involved in numerous collegiate and professional music ensembles, having performed in venues and theme parks across California, Texas, and Michigan. I've collaborated and performed with musicians of every level, from beginner to professional, and thus have gained an understanding of the support, guidance, and inspiration necessary for fostering the next generation of musicians.

About the lesson

In starting lessons with me, we will first assess your personal level of proficiency and factor in your unique interests and goals on the instrument. Finger placement, posture, and overall technique should always come first as these help us achieve a comfortable and safe playing experience (think the "Alexander Technique"). In more improvised genres, such as blues and jazz, we'll devote a portion of time during every lesson to improvising over a backing track or with live accompaniment. This experience will go far beyond typical "jamming" as we'll be engaging concrete concepts we've gone over in previous lessons; this will help us achieve a truer sense of musical expression and freedom without sacrificing musicality.
