About Johnnie

I achieved a First Class degree in Economics from Manchester University and a Distinction in MSc. Computational Statistics and Machine Learning from University College London.

My professional background is as a trader for a major investment bank and quantitative advisor to hedge funds. In line with my keen interest in the application of mathematics and statistics, I completed the notorious Certificate in Quantitative Finance - scoring a 98% course average.

I am an outgoing and enthusiastic tutor that has used mathematics, statistics and economics in a variety of professional situations. I inspire students by helping them grasp the essence of the subject and realise that maths isn't confined to textbooks but is critical to so much in the modern world.

I believe in instilling a thorough understanding of mathematical concepts and approaches to problem solving (which will include lots of guided practice). If exams are a focus of tutoring sessions then a certain amount of 'drilling' past papers is required to ensure understanding of question wording and style. However, by concentrating on understanding concepts and practicing a range of problems (not just past papers) students will not only be fully prepared for exams - regardless of what examiners throw at them - but also for application to other school subjects and as a foundation for further study.

Most of my students focus on mathematics and statistics but I also tutor economics to A-Level and extra-curricular subjects including data science and (beginner) Python programming.

I am working full-time as a tutor and the below schedule is just a guide. I am happy to conduct Skype tutor sessions or to visit homes in Central/North/West London. My other interests include kite-surfing, motorbike riding and triathlon. I enjoy the outdoors and experiencing other cultures which has led me to travel extensively in Asia, Central America and Southern Africa.
