About Richard
In my 10 years of teaching guitar, I've found that the most effective way to inspire students is by making lessons deeply personal, relevant, and interactive. I work primarily with school and college students, and every one of them has brought their own personality, learning style, and musical influences to our lessons. My approach always begins with listening—understanding what excites them about music and where they want to go with their playing. I teach fundamental skills like posture, finger positioning, chord fluency, and strumming with precision, and then layer in music theory in ways that support those practical skills. But I also make space for experimentation, encouraging students to write their own melodies, jam along to backing tracks, or even analyze their favorite artists' techniques. A key highlight for me was helping a student prepare and perform their first solo acoustic set, watching them evolve from shy and unsure to poised and passionate on stage. I create an atmosphere where students feel free to explore, make mistakes, and find their own sound. I want each student to walk away from lessons not just with technical know-how, but with a deeper sense of musical identity and joy.

Guitar learning is never just about mastering finger positions or memorizing scales—it’s about discovering a voice, building identity, and finding joy in sound. That’s the core of my teaching philosophy. I work with students not as blank slates to be filled with instructions but as individuals with stories, tastes, and instincts that can be unlocked and sharpened through music. Each lesson is a collaboration.
Whether you're just starting out or returning to the guitar after years away, I meet you exactly where you are, designing a curriculum that connects to your real interests—be it indie, folk, jazz, funk, blues, or a genre all your own. Technique matters, and we absolutely build solid foundations: posture, precision, timing, tone. But these aren’t taught in the abstract. We immediately link everything we practice to music that matters to you, whether that’s breaking down your favorite track, analyzing a particular chord voicing you love, or improvising with a rhythm groove you find exciting.
I use a multi-sensory approach to accommodate different learning styles—visual charts, audio loops, physical movement, theory integration—so learning is as clear as it is creative. If something isn’t clicking, we pause, explore, and adjust until it makes sense in your language. I want you to know why your fingers should move a certain way and how that relates to feel, tone, and expression. And when challenges arise—and they will—I support you through them with clarity and calm. We don’t gloss over frustrations. We unpack them, so you can build lasting, transferable skills that keep you growing long after our lessons are over. My feedback style is honest, respectful, and aimed at growth. I’ll tell you what’s going well, where the next step is, and how to get there—all without judgment. I also incorporate elements that support your full musicianship: we’ll explore songwriting if you want to write, soloing if you want to lead, performance prep if you want to play live, and even gear tips if you’re setting up your first home recording space. This method isn’t about turning you into a copy of someone else—it’s about helping you discover your sound, your rhythm, and your joy in playing guitar.
