About Michael

I completed my undergraduate degree with UH at Manoa with a B.S. in Molecular & Cell Biology and my M.S. in Infectious Disease. I have over 9 years of experience in performing applied research and do my best to keep up with new and relevant information in my field. I greatly enjoy teaching and hope to continue doing so at the university level upon completing my graduate degree.

My teaching experiences started off in college with leading a majority of study groups whenever they were organized and have progressed to now where I help teach a lot of introductory level microbiology + cell biology lab courses at the community college. Outside of teaching coursework, I also train undergraduate students who are interested in scientific research laboratory techniques relevant to my field today. I believe all of my students and mentees have come out with stronger understanding of the subject material.

About the lesson

I prefer to provide a guiding hand to my students when it comes to answering the question(s) at hand rather than telling them immediately how/why things work. I like to ensure that my students actually understand the course material and are able to demonstrate a true mastery of the subject material that allows them to take what they learn to the next appropriate level instead of non-sensical memorization. I understand everyone learns differently and aim to find the learning strategy that works best for your. Overall my hope is to cultivate my students' critical thinking skills and give them the tools needed in order to be able to engage in topics themselves.

Details

Depending on the distance needed to travel, I am willing to waive my travel free. I do highly recommend to take advantage of my first free lesson as I intend to use that time to mainly get to know the student, which areas they seem to be struggling in, and lay the appropriate groundwork in order to tailor my lessons specifically to their needs.
