About Danyang

I specialise in helping students achieve Grades 8–9 in GCSE Chinese through structured, exam-focused training.

TCSOL-qualified Mandarin teacher with over 20 years of experience, specialising in GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level exam preparation. I am also a certified HSK examiner and GCSE Speaking Examiner, with a clear understanding of exam requirements and marking criteria.

Many of my students have achieved strong GCSE results, including those who initially struggled or lacked confidence.

I have developed a structured GCSE Chinese programme, supported by my own teaching materials, to help students improve efficiently and master key exam skills.

I focus on delivering targeted, high-impact teaching, while maintaining a supportive and engaging learning environment where students are challenged but not overwhelmed.

Alongside 1:1 tuition, I run multiple local GCSE Chinese group classes, allowing me to identify patterns in student performance and deliver highly targeted, exam-focused teaching.

Find out more about Danyang

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

As a Mandarin teacher, I possess fluency in the language owing to my Chinese origins. Having been born and raised in Northern China, I developed a clear and standard pronunciation which proves advantageous during lessons, as it facilitates better comprehension for learners.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I believe Jackie Chan is a living embodiment of Mandarin culture. Not only is he a talented actor and martial artist, but he also embodies the values of hard work, perseverance, and humility that are so important in Chinese culture.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

"有缘千里来相会" (yǒu yuán qiān lǐ lái xiāng huì) is a beautiful phrase in Mandarin, which means that destiny can bring individuals together no matter how far apart they are. This expression emphasizes the significance of fate and relationships in Chinese culture, including the special bond between a tutor and their student who are brought together for a common purpose:-)
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world and is the official language of China, which has the second-largest economy in the world. Knowing Mandarin can open up many economic opportunities for business, trade, and investment in China.

Mandarin is becoming an increasingly popular language choice in schools around the world, and learning it can give students an edge in college admissions and future job prospects.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

There are several difficulties in learning Mandarin, including:
    • Tones: Mandarin is a tonal language, which means that the meaning of words can change depending on the tone used to pronounce them. This can be particularly difficult for learners who are not accustomed to distinguishing between different tones.

    • Characters: Mandarin uses Chinese characters, which are completely different from the Roman alphabet used in English. Learning these characters can take a lot of time and effort.
    • Grammar: Mandarin grammar can be challenging for English speakers because the sentence structure and word order are often different from what they are used to.

To help with the learning process, you can:
    • Finding a professional tutor who can provide guidance and feedback throughout the learning process can be invaluable. Tutors can offer personalised instruction and support, helping you overcome obstacles and make progress more quickly.
    • Consistency and persistence are also key, learning a new language takes time and effort, so it's important to practice regularly and stay motivated.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was learning English as a second language, I struggled with differentiating between the words "hear" and "listen." Despite studying grammar rules and vocabulary extensively, it was hard for me to grasp the subtle differences in meaning between these two words.

One day, my English teacher shared an anecdote that helped me fully understand the distinction. She said, "Hearing is simply perceiving sound through your ears, but listening is actively paying attention to what you hear and processing its meaning."

This simple yet powerful explanation taught me that language learning is not just about memorizing technical details like grammar rules and vocabulary. It's about understanding the nuances of communication and developing the ability to interpret and respond appropriately to what we hear. This lesson has stayed with me throughout not only my language learning but also my teaching journey.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Travel and immersion in a language and culture can be incredibly beneficial for improving language skills. One personal example I can share is that of my son, who was born in the UK and primarily spoke English. However, after spending just one month in China, he made significant progress in his Mandarin abilities. Not only was he able to communicate with my parents for hours on end, but he also used more complex vocabulary and demonstrated a better understanding of Chinese customs and culture.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Superprof is a well-established tutoring platform that connects teachers with students. It offers a great user experience, allowing teachers to easily manage their lessons, schedule appointments, and communicate with students. Additionally, Superprof doesn't charge commission fees on tuition for a premium account.

Superprof also has a review system where students can leave feedback and ratings after each lesson, which helps teachers build a strong professional reputation and increase their bookings. For teachers looking to grow their teaching business, Superprof presents an excellent option.
