About Andrea

I am currently studying Environmental Engineering at Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores Monterrey in Mexico City and am taking a sabbatical in the UK. I am from Mexico City and my first language is Spanish. I am a keen athlete and love any kind of art form.
I believe that the best way to learn a language is through conversation and constant exposure to it.
I have been teaching children part time for the past 7 years. This is something that started as helping my friends and classmates to pass their secondary school exams. I then realised I was good at it and decided to make more of it by teaching more frequently and formally. One of my most successful experiences was teaching an eleven year old with an attention deficit disorder who was struggling to learn multiplication tables. My strategy was to look for something that would interest him enough to use as an aid - this turned out to be football! I told him we would go to the garden with the ball and pass it around, every pass made he would have to answer a multiplication table question. Doing this helped keep him focused and he did in the end successfully learn his multiplication tables. From there on he raised his grades 3 points and was passing exams with ease.
In my seven years of teaching I have taught groups of up to 10 people at a time, as well as one-on-one sessions for more than 20 individual students. I can cover a ide range of academic topics; maths up to high school level, English all levels, Spanish all levels, French and Italian up to a B1- B2 level, sciences up to high school level, arts and history. As I am a keen athlete, I am also able to teach sport. My athletics specialism is sport climbing and have been hired to teach introductory climbing lessons which included techniques, specialist fitness training and safety procedures. In effect,"climbing 101".

I think that every person is different so I base my exercises depending on the person’s interests and abilities. I believe that the best way to learn a language is through constant exposure to it so I do tend to leave homework, wether it is to listen to songs, watch movies, read or investigate, or create conversation; just practice! In order to make the fore mentioned more interesting homework and exercises will always be based on the student's interests.
As it is necessary for every language there must be some part of grammar and spelling, this I reinforce through repetition and logic comprehension. Usually the first lessons are purely based on vocabulary and most used phrases or words such as "thank you", "please", saying your name, asking for help, ordering something, numbers, colours, and to make it more interesting and fun I like include a few slang expressions that can relate to that day's lesson. The next step would be basic grammar rules, like syllable separation and verbs in their base form. This will enable students to form very basic sentences and start understanding the basis of the language. From there on lessons become a mixture of both grammar and spelling with vocabulary and either speaking, reading or listening comprehension.
Considering my philosophy, I don't have a target group of students. I believe that a good teacher is not one that knows everything about a subject, a good teacher is someone who can help someone understand something for his or her ability to transmit information, no matter who they are trying to help.
