About Derek

Hi, I'm Derek — and I know what it feels like to sit where you're sitting. I've spent over 26 years working in some of the most challenging and fast-paced engineering environments in the world, but some of the most rewarding moments of my career came when I stepped into the classroom. As an Engineering Lecturer at West College Scotland, I discovered a real passion for helping students and apprentices unlock their potential — not just passing exams, but genuinely understanding the subject and feeling confident in their abilities. Over five years, I worked with learners at every level, from those just starting out and finding their feet, to apprentices from industry looking to sharpen their skills and gain recognised qualifications. I have a talent for taking complex, intimidating topics and breaking them down into something that makes sense — and more importantly, something that sticks. I hold an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering and an Honours degree in Engineering Management, so I know the academic demands inside out too. Whether you're struggling to keep up, aiming for top marks, or simply want to build real confidence in STEM and Engineering subjects — I'd love to help you get there. Learning should feel like progress, not pressure, and that's exactly the experience I aim to create in every session.

For exam students, we roll up our sleeves and work through past papers together, turning weak spots into strengths and building the kind of confidence that really shows on results day. My passion is making the complex feel simple — breaking down tricky concepts into something that just clicks. Whatever your starting point, we'll work together to get you exactly where you want to be.
