About Laurie

My name is Laurie Duncan, and I’m a 3rd year Mathematics student at the University of Warwick. I think Maths is a brilliant subject because it’s so rewarding when you can understand it – after spending ages on hard algebra or calculations, when you finally make the breakthrough and get the answer it feels fantastic! I was always helping friends with Maths at school by explaining concepts and working through examples, and I taught myself almost half of the content for A-level Further Maths, so I’m experienced in finding lots of different ways of understanding topics which suit different students. I believe that visualising Maths problems is hugely important, and I encourage students to draw diagrams and sketches, which 90% of the time will help to make problems clearer and easier to interpret. Aside from Maths I play trumpet, piano and flute, so I appreciate the importance of practice when learning to master a skill. The same approach can be used for Maths, and just like when learning to play music, hard work will pay off and you will start to enjoy Maths so much more.

I am very flexible in my approach to tutorials, we can work on topics that you feel you are struggling with, or I can pick topics at random to strengthen knowledge you already have or to help you discover weaknesses you weren’t aware of. I can work through example questions with you, and give you exercises to do in your own time to gain the vital experience needed to do well in exams.

I think past paper questions are a good way of measuring your progress and giving you a goal to aim for. Once you can answer these types of questions, you will become more confident in your ability, and this in turn will improve your exam performance. I always get nervous about exams, so I can give you tips on making sure you don’t let your nerves get the better of you when being tested.
