About David
Experienced classroom teacher with a track record of success at all levels.
Recognised by colleagues and students as a subject-knowledge expert adept at explaining mathematical concepts using concrete manipulatives (i.e. counters, blocks, etc) and diagrams (bar models, etc) to solidify understanding before moving on to formal written methods.
My excellent subject knowledge allows me to think on my feet and adapt lessons on the fly to meet the emerging needs of students, and to explain any concept in multiple, complementary ways.
My varied "lived experience" outside of teaching (migrating to the US and back, working in everything from unskilled building site labour to a Big 4 Accountancy firm and everything in between) makes me particularly fond of answering "when will I need this in real life?"
Some of my professional highlights include:
- When I taught a class of "set 6" students, who were all predicted Grades 1 and 2, three of them achieved a Grade 4.
- When I taught in a school with two top-sets (and a further two"2nd set" classes also studying Higher Level GCSE Maths), my classes were the only ones to produce any Grade 9 results for two years in a row.
-When I taught at a school that entered students for the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge, four of my students reached the second round of the competition (in a typical year, only one or two students in the whole year group reached that level).

Online lessons for groups or individuals, at all ages from Year 7 to Year 11.
Lessons range from mastering fundamentals (e.g. number bonds, number fluency, times-tables etc) up to Further Maths at GCSE.
At all levels, my teaching methodology incorporates a diagrammatic visualisation of HOW the mathematics works. This aids students' understanding and confidence, reduces the need for rote memorisation of procedures, and allows students to unlock the links between various fields of mathematics.
I encourage the use of touch-screen technology (i.e. online whiteboards) so that I can see a student's working in real-time and offer immediate feedback.
Lessons typically one hour.
