About Alexander

Growing up, I've always been very curious about the world. Questions like "Why is the sky blue" or "What are all those clouds in the sky for", would always puzzle me. Throughout my formative years, I would read about these routinely. However, like many students, once I took my first Algebra class, things did not come easy to me. I remember my teacher said something along the lines of "it'll be easier for you if you understand rather than just memorize." Trying as I might, I would still struggle and had some rough grades on tests where the material was not easy to understand. In high school, I faced the same roadblock with Geometry and Calculus which required me to study late and stress out. It could have been easier if I reached out for help, but like many students, I did not and thought that the struggle was all part of the process. Going into college, I realized the error of my ways and worked in study groups and met with the professors occasionally. This was extremely helpful and boosted my confidence greatly, and a friend of mine actually convinced me to get a degree in Math. I never turned back! The topic was so fascinating to me, and there was so much to learn. During this time, I became a math instructor at Mathnasium, and I found that the moment a student grasped a difficult concept was a very fulfilling one. It reminded me that I was right where I needed to be. The one thing I learned is that every student is different and in teaching certain concepts, a unique approach catered to that individual is often called for. Additionally, I found that a pressure-free, empathetic approach allowed my students to relax and focus better. It's more than normal to struggle with new ideas and concepts, but it's not a lost cause. It's just an opportunity for growth and new knowledge.

About the lesson

My teaching method is a mix of various strategies that are not only intended to foster an understanding of the material but also seek to engage the student by using a friendly and understanding tone. Oftentimes, students would come to me stressed or tired, so I try to meet them in the middle and see where the problem areas are. Lessons taught at school are often explained quickly and to a great number of students, so the nitty-gritty details are often overlooked. I hope to fill in those gaps by sharing what I know and maybe what's helped me (if that would work best for that specific student). Finally, I just want to say the learning can be enjoyable, and I seek to make that a reality for everyone I come across here.
