About Ozlem

I currently have received my PhD degree in Math from Tulane University. I majored in Math in Dokuz Eylul University, Turkey. Also got my master from the same university. During my time at Tulane, I was teaching for several elementary/advanced level math courses in the last couple of years as a teaching assistant/instructor.

My primary mission is to provide students with the understanding they need to succeed in mathematics. I offer year long tutoring, short term test prep, or full course instruction. To achieve success, I work with a learner in a positive, supportive, and encouraging manner. Student satisfaction is my goal. During the first session I introduce myself, get to know the learner's needs, and we express our mutual expectations for the sessions. A short lesson is given to assess the student's learning level, and a decision is made about future sessions.

About the lesson

One of my main teaching goals is to encourage the students to participate in class by giving them time to brainstorm. I have found that it is very important to give the students a chance to answer questions and remind them it is not always about getting the right answer but understanding the path to the right answer. This helps students to build their confidence and make them hungry to learn more. At the same time, I want my students to be able to understand how mathematics works by introducing the definitions with examples, stating theorems with examples and counterexamples, and encouraging them to read the textbook to review the subject.

As a teacher, I have found it is also important to be aware of the fact that there are often students of varying ability levels within the same classroom. I teach students effectively by keeping the majority of examples at a level that every student can follow, and then challenging my students to solve similar problems as well as slightly more complex and deeper problems.

My other essential goal in teaching is to stimulate my student’s interest in mathematics. Mathematics is a subject against which many students harbor prejudice. Many math educators have been questioned about the necessity of math problems in their daily lives.
