  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

Unlike many other fields, mathematics is not subjective. Each question has a definite answer and when you solve it, you can either be right or wrong. There are no grey areas. I personally appreciate this objective approach and the certainty that comes with it.

The adrenaline rush you get when you finally solve a problem that at first seemed impossible is unmatched. I feel that math always catches your attention and never becomes monotonous, so every new day learning in this wonderful field is something unexpected and something you can look forward to. Also, on a personal note, most of my family members come from a teaching profession thereby creating an environment conducive to take it up as a profession right from a young age. The fact that numbers are so pervasive in every aspect of human civilization motivated me to pursue it on a deeper level hence ingraining that love and obsession for the subject. I believe math is the most rudimentary tool we can pass on to the next generation to keep them informed and set them on a course to lead an impactful life.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

It's easier to teach students who have a natural inclination towards the subject but the real challenge lies in making a student fall in love with the subject. That's my motivation to teach students math and I strongly believe Math enhances analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, fosters systematic and logical thinking, and broadens the mind to handle unfamiliar tasks with confidence. Also, the fact that without the evolution of math, the entire human civilisation would have been centuries behind intrigued me; because the development of math has in turn led to various technological and theoretical developments in reality-altering disciplines such as astronomy, physics, computing, and information technology to name a few.
  • How does your work help society?

Teachers play a crucial role in shaping the minds of young people and helping them develop the skills and knowledge they need to become responsible, informed, and engaged citizens. Education is often seen as a key driver of social mobility, and I feel I can help provide students from disadvantaged backgrounds with the skills and knowledge they need to overcome obstacles and achieve success. A well-educated population is often associated with stronger economic outcomes, and teachers can play an important role in helping to ensure that students are prepared for the workforce.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

Sudha Murthy is my role model for her dedication to making a difference. Her book "Wise and Otherwise: A Salute to Life" features an inspiring story titled "The Good Teacher." It follows Malathi, a determined young girl from a humble background who overcomes obstacles to becoming a teacher with the help of a supportive mentor. This anecdote illustrates the transformative power of education and the profound impact of dedicated teachers. This character has had a profound impact on my life and ignited a life-lasting love for Sudha Murthy's writing. Her commitment to philanthropy and education makes her an exemplary role model for anyone aspiring to create positive change.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

I am a trained Bharatnatyam dancer and also love reading autobiographies and non-fiction books.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

As a recent anecdote, I had the pleasure of working with a student named Zulal who struggled with confidence in her math abilities. Despite her initial reservations, Zulal approached each session with determination and a willingness to learn.

As we progressed, I noticed Zulal's confidence growing with each problem she solved correctly. One day, she excitedly exclaimed, "I never knew math could be this fun!" It was a pivotal moment that highlighted the transformative power of encouragement and support.

Over time, Zulal's grades improved significantly, but more importantly, her newfound confidence extended beyond math class. She began tackling challenges with a positive attitude, embracing the idea that with perseverance, she could overcome any obstacle.

Witnessing Zulal's journey reaffirmed my belief in the profound impact educators can have on their students' lives. It reminded me that sometimes, the most meaningful victories aren't found in test scores, but in the moments of empowerment and self-discovery along the way.
