About Ian
I am a 30 year old Materials Engineer with a Master of Engineering degree from Virginia Tech.
I work as a Senior Laboratory Engineer on thin-film polymer engineering projects. That's my job.
When I teach, I prefer to focus on what the student already knows, but doesn't realize they know. I started as a camp counselor throughout my high school summers. I tutored high school physics students in my senior year of high school; in college, I worked as a TA for three years.
The world is made of math, but math isn't all that interesting -- at least, not to me. Math is just a tool to describe how a bird pulls out of a dive, how a tree sways in the wind, or how a teenager is equal to a black hole. I can help students make that connection without getting lost in the numbers. I'm here to help.

My educational style has always been more about methods and applications than pure theory,
I prefer to start with a question - i.e. "I'm driving on a curved road in the rain. My mom is a worrywart and seems to like me at least a little, so I'm pretty sure she would prefer I survive the drive. How fast can I take these curves?". From there, I break it down into all the bits and pieces that matter. Only once the student understands the "what" and the "why" do we get into the math behind the "how".
Most students who struggle have issues with "why is this ever going to matter to me?". I like helping them connect the math that they think doesn't matter to the things their brain does subconsciously every minute of every day.
I can help with high school- through college sophomore-level material and have some experience working with learning disabilities.
