About Anita

Hello. My name is Anita, and I’ve been writing and teaching for most of my life. With over 30 years experience, I have worked with people from all over the world, from all backgrounds, at all skill levels, and in all genres, from academic essays and exams to novels.

I hold a Master's degree in Creative Writing from UBC and a BA with Honors in English Literature and Psychology. I was a Teaching Assistant for four years, teaching Screenwriting, Fiction, and Non-Fiction/Journalism, and a UBC Writing Centre tutor. I've won several awards and scholarships for academic excellence and “Outstanding Female in Creative Writing and Film”. I am a certified 500-Hour Yoga teacher, specializing in nervous system health and emotional resilience. LGBTQIA2S+ ally and advocate.

As a writer and somatic trauma counselor (somatic = body), I have dedicated my life to empowering people to share their stories and express themselves creatively through writing. Writing is an organic process— a practice, not separate from the body (and who we are), so I also work with the learner’s nervous system to build a sense of safety and increase confidence.

I have a background in inclusive strategic communications for social justice campaigns and the federal government, heart-centered writing coaching for humanitarian non-profit organizations, and specialize in coaching non-native English speakers.

Whether you need to strengthen your reading skills, master how you communicate with others, or write a compelling story, I am committed to guiding you with care and encouragement, in a judgment-free container.

About the lesson

I offer lessons that are born out of a “workshop” inspired approach. We actively work with the learner’s writing and see it through the various stages of development, while nurturing confidence and ease of expression.

Each lesson begins with a brief review and grounding practice to encourage new learning. We then move into a targeted discussion about your writing. As all learners’ needs are unique, the lessons come from those discussions.

This is a highly personalized and evolving approach to learning writing and creative self-expression. I meet each learner where they currently are, and offer emotional support throughout the process. I offer a safe(r) container to explore any barriers to learning/writing that the student may be experiencing. I am patient, supportive, highly empathetic, and strive to create a space where learners feel seen, heard, and supported as they gain confidence in their skills and ability to express themselves.

While I have experience with all ages, my lessons are ideal for older learners (High school and up), writers who would benefit from “workshopping” their writing, learners who struggle with barriers related to identity and self-expression, learners attempting to convey complex ideas for various audiences, and ESL learners who want to strengthen their English through patient, personalized instruction.

If you prefer to meet in-person and are located over a 45-minute drive away, there may be a small fee for travel.
