About Kiah

I have recently completed a MSc in Archaeology by Dissertation (distinction), aiming for an international doctorate. I am also a long-time World Schools Debating coach and tutor. I have worked one-on-one with children as young as ten, and twelve year-olds in a class setting. However, I specialise in late high school and early university tutoring or debate coaching. I use this combined skill-set to teach essay writing, argument, analysis, and all levels of English comprehension in reading, writing, and speaking.

I held the position of Academic Development tutor in the Archaeology department of the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa in 2018 and 2019. I conducted in-lecture and optional support classes on an individual and group level for all undergraduates. I also offered my skills in dissertation planning, analysis and proofreading to Honors students during this time. I have designed my own tutoring curricula, as well as tutoring under lecturer-prescribed guidelines in undergraduate courses.

I have been one of the debating coaches for Parktown High School for Girls since February 2019. They are the top-ranked all-girls' school in Gauteng debating. I was involved in the Western Cape Schools debating system from 2013 to 2015, primarily as a member and director of the Thethani Debating League, a PBO focused on supplying debating coaches and resources to disadvantaged schools in the Western Cape. However, I also coached and adjudicated up to a provincial level during this time.

My multifaceted approach to teaching critical thinking, logic, sequential analysis and clear writing and thinking, has allowed me the versatility to teach a range of students in a range of areas, in a format that best suits them and their personal strengths and weaknesses.

About the lesson

My teaching method is based on discussion and conversation, aimed at the level of the student in question. I use exercises and assignments to help students test their overall comprehension of a subject, and to assist me in evaluating their progress. I assign practice essays, develop exercises for subject-relevant critical reading and evaluation, and correct and shape writing to suit university requirements at all levels.

Details

Please book all lessons at least 48 hours in advance.
My working hours are 8am to 6pm CAT, Mondays to Fridays. I will take sessions on weekends if given sufficient notice.
All cancellations must be made by email or via the website 24 hours in advance, or it will be considered a non-attendance.
In the case of a valid emergency, notice must be given six hours in advance.
I will charge for petrol only if I drive out and the lesson is cancelled or does not take place.

I am willing to negotiate my rates based on the student's age, and the subject being taught.
I have a proofreading rate for assignments to be graded at any level, at R15 per 100 words. This rate can be negotiated.
