About Rick

In my seven years as a guitar teacher, I’ve learned that the most powerful tool in a student’s development is their own curiosity. That’s why I center each lesson around what excites and inspires my students. Whether it’s pop, blues, metal, or acoustic fingerstyle, I make sure the music we use for learning is directly connected to the student's personal taste. I work mostly with school and college-age learners and have seen that a blend of structured learning and creative exploration leads to the most consistent and joyful progress. In our sessions, we focus on everything from basic chord transitions and scale patterns to songwriting, improvisation, and performance confidence. I also help students set achievable goals, whether that’s recording a cover, playing at an open mic, or mastering a complex solo. One student I worked with went from not knowing a single chord to performing a set of original music at a campus showcase within a year—and moments like that are why I love what I do. I teach with patience, empathy, and enthusiasm, creating a supportive environment where students feel safe to ask questions, take risks, and express themselves through music. I believe music is a lifelong skill and a deeply personal outlet, and I aim to help students embrace both aspects in their own time.

About the lesson

My experience teaching guitar over the last seven years has taught me that the best learning happens when students feel excited and connected to the music they are playing. I aim to create lessons that reflect each individual’s passions and goals, whether that means playing songs from their favorite bands, exploring improvisation, or diving into music theory.

I always start with a foundation of technique and rhythm, making sure students build healthy habits early on to avoid injury and frustration. From there, I weave in creative exercises that foster confidence and musical intuition. One of my proudest accomplishments as a teacher was helping a student prepare for their first live performance.

Through consistent practice, encouragement, and addressing specific challenges like stage fright and timing, they delivered a confident and expressive set that left their friends and family amazed. Moments like these highlight why I love teaching—it’s about more than just notes and chords; it’s about personal growth and artistic expression. I tailor lessons to different learning styles by combining visual aids, ear training, and hands-on practice, ensuring that students stay motivated and engaged.

I also believe in setting achievable goals and celebrating progress to keep students inspired. For those interested, I offer lessons in songwriting and improvisation, encouraging creativity beyond the written page. My role is to guide, support, and challenge students so they feel empowered to make music their own. Whether learning for fun, performance, or songwriting, my goal is to equip every student with the skills and confidence they need to enjoy the guitar for a lifetime.
