About Milena
Hello! My name is Milena, and I completed my Master’s degree in Scientific Computing at the University of Utah in December 2025. I was originally admitted to the Ph.D. program but chose to conclude my studies with a master’s degree to focus on applied and teaching work. My background combines advanced mathematics, computer science, and data analysis, giving me the skills to explain both theoretical and practical aspects of these subjects with clarity. Over the past several years, I have served as a Teaching Assistant for four semesters, teaching Discrete Mathematics to classes of more than 250 students. I have also tutored in calculus, physics, programming (Python, C/C++, R), and data structures and algorithms. These experiences have helped me develop a structured and approachable teaching style that supports students at all levels. In addition to my technical expertise, I am fluent in Russian and Belarusian, allowing me to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds. My goal is to create a patient, professional, and encouraging learning environment where students feel confident, motivated, and capable of mastering even the most challenging material.

My teaching philosophy centers on structure, intuition, and adaptability. I believe that students learn best when complex ideas are broken down into clear, logical steps and connected to intuitive reasoning rather than memorization. I aim to make each lesson a balance between understanding theory and practicing application. Teaching Method & Techniques: I begin by identifying each student’s goals, background, and preferred learning style. I use a combination of visual explanations, worked examples, and guided problem-solving to ensure mastery of each concept. In mathematics, I emphasize the “why” behind formulas and proofs. In computer science, I focus on writing clean, efficient code and understanding algorithmic thinking rather than just syntax. Typical Lesson Plan: Lessons start with a short review of previous material, followed by focused instruction on a new concept. We then work through progressively challenging exercises/code examples. I conclude each session with a brief summary and a few key problems for independent practice. For ongoing students, I build structured weekly plans that track progress across both conceptual understanding and technical skills. I combine advanced academic experience — as a graduate student in Scientific Computing at the University of Utah and a Teaching Assistant for Discrete Mathematics and Statistics — with a supportive, student-centered approach. My background allows me to teach at all levels, from high school math to graduate topics in data structures, algorithms, Python, and MATLAB. I teach high school, college, and graduate students seeking to strengthen their understanding in mathematics, computer science, or numerical computing. I also work with professionals aiming to improve their programming or analytical skills. Additionally, I am a native Russian and Belarusian speaker, offering language instruction for students who wish to learn or improve fluency for academic or personal purposes.
