About Erika

I've been giving private Italian lessons since 2019 and I have cooperated with Italian schools in Australia since 2021, teaching my beautiful language to singular students, small groups or bigger classes. When I’m not teaching, I’m also a certified Italian interpreter and as you never stop learning, I’m currently in the process of becoming an Italian certified translator, too!

About the lesson

I don't have a particular methodology, because my classes are tailored following each student's needs. I try to focus on strengths to improve confidence, but especially on weaknesses to make them strong points. I like to use different types of materials: videos for listening comprehension, role plays for oral production, articles or short stories for writing comprehension and, if you are keen, homework for written production!! I prepare all my materials by myself and provide them for FREE to my students, giving them tips on how to improve Italian in their everyday life and not only in class!! If I’m working with an absolute beginner, I usually recommend to my students to buy an Italian book: that is great for starting off and perfect for practicing in between classes. But I’m glad to discuss options with every student or group. I want my students to succeed, to achieve their goals and most importantly to become independent Italian speakers! I was born in Italy and lived most of my life there. Then, yes! I grew up speaking Italian, a language that I value immensely and that I fell deeply in love with!
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
A historical one would be Dante Alighieri, for sure: the father of our lovely language!
A living one is, in my opinion, Roberto Benigni. Another Tuscan guy of great culture, plus a very good actor!
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?
More than a word or an expression I love the fact that Italian people have an effective way to communicate just by using their hands and their body language. I think it's great!
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Italian is a language with great history and traditions. It is fully structured with its complex grammar and, let's be honest, it sounds great!!
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
For an English speaker, the main difficulty may be the Latin structure with a very vast verb tenses variety. Pronunciation can be difficult sometimes, but having a proper "guide" through the learning process and having a lot of passion would definitely boost the results.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
I remember I was terrible with grammar. I just hated it. I couldn't remember verbs, I couldn't tell the difference between an adjective or an adverb. I was just doing my assignments guessing the right answer. Then one afternoon, it was a sunny spring day, I just thought "I'm going to study this once and for all". And, I did! For some mysterious reason, I worked everything out and never ever had trouble with grammar anymore! I actually got to appreciate it and this helped me extremely in learning other languages, too!
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
I would say travelling has definitely made me appreciate my language. Noticing how people love it and how much a word can tell you about a country's culture was just making me feel super proud to be Italian!
