About Kelly

I am a professional educator, theater director, producer, playwright and actor of 35 years. I am a mom of three young men and am passionate about education for children and youth. I, too, am a perpetual student and love teaching. My motto is: "when the teacher is ready, the student appears." So let's get started! I understand the challenges of learning and the pride of accomplishment, and will encourage you to always do your best. That's all anyone can ask. Learning is a lifelong quest and I seek to inspire and motivate, and to keep your desire to learn burning brightly from your first lesson to all those that follow.

Decades of teaching experience for students of all ages (5 years to adults, including students learning additional languages), have allowed me to refine my teaching and my student centered approach. I meet with the student and incorporate strategies of learning to suit their needs. And above all, we'll have fun!

We will begin each class discussing the student's work with regard to their strengths, their challenges and then address strategies as to what they can do to improve upon their skills and ability. Lessons might include reading and writing exercises, games, research strategies, critical thinking and presentation practice, test preparation, and anything the student needs to benefit their studies and learning.

Working one-on-one will ensure the student receives quality tutoring and my undivided attention. Students are free to email questions and concerns at any time and if I am able, I will respond immediately or within 24 hours.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I began studying English in university in 1981 and eventually became English honours student. I changed faculties a couple of times, including a year and a half pursuing an
education degree, alongside French studies. I put my studies on hold for a couple of years to have a baby. Then in 1987 my husband and I took our three-year-old son and
spent seven months traveling Europe. That trip changed a lot for me, and when we returned to Canada, I transferred to the Department of Theatre and Drama and continued my studies in English via dramatic literature and graduated with my BA Hon. Degree in Theatre and Drama in 1991, followed by an MFA in Directing (Theatre and Drama), defending my thesis in 1998.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

I was once taught that language is power, and I believe everyone has the right to harness that power and make it their own. I want to instill in my students the idea that language is the foundation for a successful future, regardless of academic stream, career interests and future aspirations. Our ability to have command of the English language, and to use it to our fullest potential, is one of the most important gifts we can give ourselves.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I have been an educator for over 30 years and have taught all ages from children to seniors, from public school and private coaching to numerous universities across Canada.

Teaching is a privilege that I take very seriously, and tutoring allows me to have a unique relationship with my students that the classroom does not.

The ability to teach one person at a time, allows me the time to tap into the specific needs and goals of the individual student. I feel successful when I see that my students reach their goals. I love being in service to my students.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

There have been several teachers who have inspired me throughout my life. My earliest teachers in public school encouraged me to write journals. Their interest in what I had to say taught me that my voice is important.

I don’t think there is anything more essential to the nurturing and cultivation of a young person’s mind and spirit than acknowledging their worth. Through university my two mentors, now dear friends, reinforced those values and inspired me to be the kind of teacher and professional I am today.
  • What are your keys to success?

Tenacity, determination, courage, being authentic, a sense of humour, and understanding that failures are our biggest teachers; they are the greatest gifts we are given to become the best version of ourselves that we can be, should we choose to learn from them.

Learning is a lifelong lesson. Embracing that idea along with the other qualities I mention, have all contributed to my success. I like to pay it forward by sharing them with my students, and encouraging them to cultivate these values in themselves.
