About Robbert
I have been trained as an artist from a very young age. My father, a highly talented painter and designer himself, held my hand at age 6 to help me make my first oil painting, a yellow clown. From age 9, I was extremely lucky to live right in front of an art academy, attending all the foundational courses and at 16 I entered the etching department, simply because drawing was at the forefront of its education. All this was after school and at weekends, while I studied Latin and sciences for my International Baccalaureate. (Note: I highly recommend students at GCSE and A Levels develop their full intellectual potential – in parallel with their interests in the arts (music, theatre, literature, photography and drawing/ painting), because there is a proven cross-fertilisation of these various creative spheres, in the manner of the great polymaths such as the Renaissance master Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1515). The Tutor’s Education and Experience: prolonged studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture of Ghent and Oudenaarde (from 1968 to ‘85), the Lucas School of Arts University Ghent (1978-‘82) and the Higher Institute of Art History and Archaeology at Ghent University.

About the lesson (methodology): We start with looking at your achievements, what art you have created in the past that you are proud of; then you express what you dream of achieving, what you really would like to be able to do in art. Then we design a learning plan in a number of steps we will take together over a term, a year or a package of lessons. To determine what we want to achieve each time and then achieving that in each lesson is really satisfying. The progress you see in your results and skills is highly motivating. And even better if you achieve your end goal.

I started lessons with Robbert as a French tutor, but because we both love art - we always talk about art during our lessons, which is amazing! This is how I found out that Robbert also teaches art to young children. So now he also teaches my daughter how to draw. He is a very good teacher, who knows how to make each lesson interesting. He always listens to you and tries to build the lesson around your interests. He is a very nice person with lots of teaching experience for different age group, so I can’t recommend him high enough for both French and Art.
Robert is a very patient knowledgeable tutor. I was looking for a French tutor for a while, Robert is the best one I’ve came across.
Had a great oil painting introduction, can’t wait to do more painting with him:)
Robbert is a wonderful and highly skilled teacher. His versatility and adaptability ensure great learning outcomes.
It’s always a pleasure to learn from him and his wide range of expertise. I throughly enjoy our lessons filled with informative feedback, interesting anecdotes, and freedom to discuss a variety of topics.Robbert is approachable, engaging and very knowledgeable. He clearly enjoys doing and teaching Art, including to children. Even online he managed to build an excellent rapport with my son (11) swiftly and got him to listen and draw for a full hour, leaving him impatient for the next session. Very much recommended.
Hi Robbert hope you’re having a good summer. Just letting you know I GOT A GRADE 9 in my French GCSE. Thanks for everything you did in helping me get that grade and looking forward to seeing you in September.
Amazing tutor and helped me get a grade 9 in GCSE French
Thanks so much for everythingI took a couple of lessons with Robbert and have been really satisfied with my progress so far particularly with my drawing technics.
Robbert encourages me to look at the details in my illustrations. He shows me ways to improve them by looking at references or using new methods. I also discovered some classic masterpieces thanks to him.
Robbert is also a really nice person, a great French speaker and a very patient person! I always look forward to my next lesson with him
My son has been asking me to find a portrait tutor for some time. After seeing Robert on Superprof I instinctively knew that he would be the best teacher. Robert has had three online sessions with my son and from the very first one, I saw the doors unbolt instantly that had been holding my son back in this area of drawing ️ and art. He engages instantly from start to finish with Robert and the expert, calm, informed, knowledgeable & professional approach that Robert engages his students with is the key to success. I am 100% delighted that Robert is on board with my son and already seeing great strides in my son’s progress to becoming more skilled in his passion for drawing ️ which in turn lends to giving him high self esteem and confidence in his abilities and his identity as an artist . Thank you so very much Robert. I’m truly grateful and I highly recommend you to others looking for the expertise and knowledge you have and have bestowed already upon my son.
Robert is an outstanding teacher, so a tutor, as both the length and breath and understanding of the subject. Having worked on a number of complicated papers my pleasure to work with him. I have no hesitation whatsoever reckoning him to anybody.
I know Robert since the early ninety ninetees as him and his family even lived in our then large house in London for one year! So I have been able to talk about Art with him and share my passion for painting! A the time, I only had painted on porcelain which is a craft very much practiced in Switzerland, not so much by individuals in UK! Robert encouraged me to start painting with oil on canvas, I got totally smitten by the media and took it like a duck to the water: Robert was an excellent t tutor, guiding me and giving me clues and technique but letting me completely express myself as an artist! We even did collective painting with another artist in our house: It was very enjoyable! I still paint as a Hoby and took part in some local exhibitions! Thank you Robert! You are an accomplished artist and a great tutor!
Antoinette WellsRobbert is a great teacher, and makes sure his lessons are tailored to the individual students interests and needs. 5 stars!
I was able to meet Roberrt for my first lesson! And he was really outgoing and kind. He has a lot of knowledge with fine art and I can tell that for the rest of my lessons I will have with him will be very educational and fun!
I had the privilege of being tutored by Robert in painting, and it was truly an inspiring experience. Robert's guidance was amazing, providing me with the perfect direction to improve and strengthen my confidence in my artistic abilities. His passion for art is truly inspiring. With him as my tutor I have not only improved my skills but also discovered new techniques and approaches that have helped find what I like in my art. I extremely recommend Robert to anyone looking to elevate their artistic abilities.
Robbert has been tutoring my three children French for the last three or so months and has proved to be not only an excellent teacher but also a great motivator - although half French, my kids were very reluctant to speak French before Robbert started tutoring them. However, I think the greatest endorsement is the fact that the kids say they enjoy his lessons and that they like him.
Robbert is a charismatic and adaptive teacher who always makes me feel like he can change how he teaches on the fly when he identifies something I need help with. He's always injecting his interests and accomodates my own so that French practise becomes a delight rather than a chore. Two thumbs up!
Robbert is a great tutor when it comes to Art history, his enthusiasm and ability to get across relevant ideas of the artist or period is a joy to listen to.
I have had several theoretical lessons connected with Art history and have always found them informative and interesting.
Going on field trips to the main Art galleries in London is another excellent and enjoyable experience as Robbert always brings his wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to make the visits a highly enjoyable experience.
Robert is very talented and professional teacher able to convey his passion for art. I feel like my daughter's skills and enthusiasm are growing and she feels confident in herself, not afraid to try new things. I was looking for an art teacher for a very long time, we tried individual lessons and groups, but Lisa was dissatisfied with her works, now she is proud of her drawings, for which I am enormous grateful to Robert!
Helpful and engaging tutor, who took key interest in my needs and helped me get there. Also a great person. Thank you Robbert
Robbert has produced some great work with my daughter and she thoroughly enjoys her lessons online
Robbert has provided informative and enjoyable lessons in drawing and painting, and through his helpful advice and well planned lessons, I have seen an improvement in my observational drawing skills and my painting.
Robert is a super intelligent and fun tutor. I enjoy the natural approach to learning, where I learn from, and about, poems or stories, instead of having so many tables (like in a traditional classroom with material only available in specific textbooks). It makes the sessions more spontaneous and I gain useful references that I can easily refer back to. I unexpectedly learn more than just verbs and conjugations, like history, art, and literature, which is something that I really appreciate. I would definitely recommend Robert for a more open way to learning French!
Robbert is an excellent teacher. He is very patient when walking me through the art proccess and provides plenty of encouragement which helps keep me continue forward with my art. If you are ever worried about how to progress in your arts career I would highly recommend him - I can't wait to see where our lessons take us. :D
Robbert is a great teacher. Open minded to all styles and techniques , he explains and teaches them in a way that is easy to follow.
The classes are fun, but still provide the challenge that makes you want to improve on what you learned.
I already have learned a lot through him, not only on painting/drawing, but keeping my eyes open to the world and extracting the art out of it. Can’t wait to see what else I can learn.
Super nice tutor! We enjoyed lessons very much, and improving a lot. Thank you .
I am very pleased with my lessons with Robert. He is a very friendly, funny and experienced teacher. Would highly recommend.
A very effective teacher. Since my daughter started lessons with Robbert, I have seen much improvement in her art. He has also taught her a lot more about artists and their unique art styles, she would sometimes look them up and study them. Highly recommended!
Robbert is current my first and only tutor in classical drawing.
I started by myself, but I soon understood how I needed a proper basis for it, as I was blindly going into mistakes and bad habits.
From lesson number 1 he understood my needs and what I want to achieve through drawing, in my case classical.
The knowledge in him about Art is so vast that I managed to : swiftly rectify my bad habits, improve way beyond what I was expecting and see drawing/art as a future part of my life.
His teaching style is direct, straight, one to one and personal to your needs.
Through him I also discovered a printmaking method called etching, which will be my preferred way for me to make prints the way I want to.
If you want to improve on any type of Art, may it be drawing, painting, oil painting or also printmaking, look no further.
Robbert is the best man in town (London) and beyond (England).
Kindest Regards,
His Student,
Antonello Mirone
Robbert takes a very friendly and organic approach to learning, perfect for building confidence and conversation skills!
I've had lessons with Robbert over the past few weeks and I highly recommend anyone with interest in drawing or the arts to meet with him. As a fairly beginner, I've very much enjoyed the structured approach regarding the technical skills, but also the art culture Robbert is eager to share as he has vast knowledge of artists and art history.
I found Robbert profile on superprof. He replied very quickly and was very flexible with arranging lesson. After just one i understood much more about different techniques of drawing. Very patient and always make sure we focus on areas i want to practice. After just few meetings i can see my progress and will definitely continue my lessons with him. Fully recommend to anyone who want to learn how to draw !
Robert came to our home to tutor my children (primary school aged) and their grandma.
It was a great session enjoyed by all. Thank you Robert, looking forward to the next one.Hello art lovers, students and teachers, Robert is fantastic teacher, mentor and art educator who doesn’t just teach you the basics but pushes you to go beyond the standard ways and that too in a joyful way.
His mentoring is helping me discover my style in art.
His knowledge of art from years of experience will leave you enabled to have conversations on your art piece as well and enable you to dive deeper to see which style would identify deep within your sprit.
Don’t take just my words for it, try the class now!Mr Robbert is a fascinating and extremely nice person, with more than a great passion, talent and skill for his craft. Our first lesson was focused on getting to know each other, finding out my expectations and sharing tips and examples for a perfect start into sketching/drawing journey. I have already learned important techniques and different approaches. It was a wonderful experience and I can’t wait for my next lesson!
A few years ago I decided I want to learn drawing. Why? Because Robbert made a portrait of me, seating in front of me, in real time. I was really impressed. But at the same time I was sceptical because I don’t have much spare time. I work long hours so I thought: will this work? Well, it did work! Robbert made my learning experience easier and faster, teaching me the techniques with a smooth, consistent and structured path. No pressure. He’s also a good motivator and a sociable person. Strongly recommended. Pablo
He draws fantastically, he has lots of patience a wow teacher!!!!
I have known Robbert for many years as a great artist. Now I have discovered that he is also a very versatile drawing tutor. He helped us to draw in various styles, from Michelangelo to comic books. We learnt how to observe and draw our own hands and even practiced drawing portraits of each other. I would recommend him because he knows how to get the best out his students, is really patient and gives useful tips on how to approach very different subjects. I learnt a lot from his classes.
Scusate se scrivo in italiano.si mio figlio Gabriele a preso delle lezioni da Robert e si e trovato molto bene lo raccomando a tutti quelli che vogliono imparare.
Robbert is a truly passionate artist who is able to instill the same in his students. During an extended vacation in Italy my son was tutored in many mediums including landscapes in acrylic, sketching of the Dumo, lino printing and hand crafting a chess set out of clay. Robbert was able to engage with my son on a level that allowed him to unlock his creative side in a fun, personal and insightful way.
Robbert is a very patient and good teacher. He considers French as his mother tongue, because he was brought up in that language. He speaks it almost like a native frenchman and loves it. You will be delighted to follow his lessons !
Robbert Ruigrok speaks five languages with wit, precision and conversational naturalness, he knows everything there is to know about art. Robbert is also an accomplished artist in a variety of mediums, and a talented painter in both realist and abstract modes. His knowledge of art history is profound. He is a specialist in the northern Renaissance but is equally versed in all the schools, movements and 'isms' of 19th & 20th century art and everything in between. I could not think of a better more patient, knowledgeable and entertaining tutor than Robbert Ruigrok.
