About Luis

I discovered chess at the age of 12 and wished I had started earlier. During my teenage years, I participated in multiple international tournaments, representing my country as its champion. I traveled and competed throughout many cities in Mexico in my youth. After that, I founded a chess club at my high school and taught anyone interested in learning. My love for chess is so deep that I was able to share it with that club. Witnessing each small progress made by my friends reminded me of the feelings I experienced during tournaments, especially when I came home with a medal hanging around my neck. I revived the magic of chess within myself. This passion led me to teach. I have shared my love for chess with hundreds of individuals, ranging from a four-year-old girl to a seventy-two-year-old woman. This is one of the beautiful aspects of chess: it is a sport that can be enjoyed at any age. I firmly believe that chess is a powerful tool for humanity as it helps us utilize reasoning. I am convinced that if more people played chess, we would gradually create a better society—one that is fairer and where we all think before we act.

  • 1) When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

My dad introduced me to the game at the age of 10, I remember liking the game but I was a soccer player. My journey as a chess instructor began during my high school years, following a successful run in national tournaments during my adolescence. My passion for chess ignited when I met my first teacher. He started teaching me theory at the age of 12. I wish I had been introduced to it earlier! The strategic depth and the thrill of outmaneuvering my opponent immediately captivated me. I was hooked, devouring books and analyzing master games, and this passion has only intensified over the years, leading me to become a FIDE instructor and share my love of chess with others.
  • 2) Which chess masters affect you the most?

I find inspiration in the works of chess masters like Capablanca and Karpov. Their strategic brilliance and innovative approaches to the game continue to inspire me. I am also deeply affected by the writings of Kasparov, whose insights on strategy and tactics have proven invaluable in both chess and life.
  • 3) What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this area?

Success in chess requires a combination of analytical skills, strategic thinking, tactical awareness, and mental fortitude. One must be able to anticipate future moves, calculate variation.
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on learning chess?

My most valuable advice is to break down large projects into smaller, manageable tasks. This makes the process less daunting and allows for a sense of accomplishment with each step. It's also crucial to schedule dedicated time for creative work and to eliminate distractions that can hinder progress. Finally, don't be afraid to experiment and take risks. Creativity thrives on exploration and innovation.
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

My passion for chess is all-consuming. It fills me with a sense of joy, excitement, and fulfillment. Every time I sit down at the board, I feel a surge of energy and anticipation. The game challenges me intellectually, pushes me to think creatively, and allows me to express myself in a unique and powerful way.
  • 6) What achievements are you particularly proud of?

I am most proud of the positive impact I have had on my students. Seeing them progress, develop their skills, and gain confidence is incredibly rewarding. I am also proud of my role in promoting chess in my community, particularly among children, and fostering a love for the game in the next generation. On the other hand, I have many experiences earned by participating in national competitions, all sponsored by the government, I've visited 31 out of 32 states in Mexico, and even been to Vegas once. Trophies and medals as Sinaloa's champion. A Bronce National Medal and now I start to see my students grow and get their own trophies.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

I have been fortunate to work with many talented students, but I was particularly impressed by a young boy who, despite having no prior experience, quickly grasped the fundamentals of the game and began playing at a very high level. His natural aptitude and dedication were truly remarkable.
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

My secret to being a successful Superprof is passion, patience, and a genuine desire to help my students succeed. I believe that every individual has the potential to learn and grow, and I strive to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students can thrive. I also believe in the power of positive reinforcement and celebrating successes, no matter how small. Ultimately, my goal is to inspire a love of learning and a lifelong appreciation for the game of chess.
